One Year Later

Jacqueline watched with interest as her brother and his wife argued over whose turn it was to change their baby boy’s filthy diaper. How could two grown ass adults want to actually want to change a stinky child? Jack was a very hand’s on father and the three month old baby was well on it’s way to being spoiled rotten considering Jack arguing his son’s diapers smelled like a healthy child. She had to give credit to Aspen. Aspen wasn’t so much wanting to change the diaper but rather was trying to stop her husband from taking two hours of alone time with their child because every time he changed his son, he felt strongly they should bond with cuddles after.

“It’s weird right?” Bar’s voice as he leaned his head closer to hers on the sofa where they were seated made her nod.

“I’ve never seen any being, in any species, love being a dad as much as he does. It’s why he’s such a good big brother I guess. Lots of love in that heart of his.” Jacqueline shrugged and accepted the drink Wilder held out to her as he moved to sit on the other side of her.

“What a dumb name for an Alpha wolf,” Bar snickered. “When we found out his real name was Bart it was a good day.”

“It was better than calling him Alpha-Hole to his face.” Jacqueline commented to Bar seriously.

“He called his woman easy in front of us last year at this same event. I think Alpha-Hole fit.”

“In his defense,” Dana said as she approached, “she was easy. She fully admits it. She also gave him an herbal flower which crushed his libido to a pulp and then flirted with every man in the room just to prove she could. He couldn’t fuck her into submission and she took it a bit too far when she was dancing on the bar top.”

“She had way too much to drink that night.”

“She was singing U + Ur Hand at the top of her lungs.” Dana snorted. “How is it she’s still not pregnant is what I want to know. Every time she comes to visit her family here in town, she’s hobbling because he makes sure she’ll miss him when she’s gone. The man has serious jealousy issues.” Dana rubbed her belly, “I feel more of us should be pregnant by now. Misery likes company.”

Bjorn appeared behind her and rubbed her shoulders before kissing her cheek, “my love, I don’t know how many ways to apologize. The condom broke my sperm were aware ties shouldn’t count.”

The laughter in his voice as he cajoled his wife made the group sitting around the small table laugh.

“That,” Jacqueline let her eyes drift to the door, “was a pregnancy I did not expect. Daddy Jack spent too much time in the temple asking for help and guidance. I still don’t know what the Queen Mother was thinking.” They watched the glowing Winika entering the space her eyes searching for Jacqueline.

“A do over,” Rafferty made a face. “I think I’d be embarrassed if my parents got pregnant now.”

“I think King Jack is embarrassed for himself. He mentioned abdicating the throne to lock himself and his cock in a tower.” Wilder laughed. “Jack told him he’d refuse the crown if he did.”

“At least she’s going to therapy now so she learns how not to make the same mistakes she did before and she’s working on her marriage.” Dana offered.

“I think it’s that last part which put them in a geriatric pregnancy.” Jacqueline grinned at Dana’s snorted response.

“Hey,” River’s voice sang out from behind the sofa, “the fun has arrived.”

“He was su psechtag slopes doing one last run. The journalist and photographer wanted a couple more shots with the sunset and blah blah,” she rolled her eyes. “They expect him to take the podium.”

“Was Nancy around?” Wilder asked curiously and a bit worriedly.

“No. Our town sentinel made it so every time she enters the town she becomes quite viciously ill. She is in her room puking buckets.” River smiled at Dana gratefully and Dana bowed dramatically.

“It is my absolute pleasure.” Dana grinned.

Tabby’s voice was whiny, “I was blaming you at first, Dana.” She moved to sit where she always liked to sit, right at Jacqueline’s feet. For some reason, Tabby had gravitated to Jacqueline over the year like an annoying little sister who couldn’t get close enough. “I’ve been puking all week since I got back to town and I thought Dana was fucking with me. Then I remembered being pregnant. I thought I was done with this morning sickness thing.” Jacqueline held out a little bouquet of herbs. “Chew these. It’s safe for the pup and it works wonders. I’ve been keeping Winika stocked with it.”

“I had whole week of no illness.”

“Where’s the Alpha-Hole?” Bar asked with a grin.

Batht

and is creating an opportunity for your mate to take care of you so that he’s nearby so the pup can feel him.”

“I do not get two minutes of peace when I am home. My favorite part of the day is when he rolls out of bed to go take a shower and I can finally have thoughts to myself.” Her eyes widened, “that’s when I puke. The little shit,” she poked her stomach, “is making me follow him to the shower. He better not come out wanting daddy more than mommy putting me through all this shit.”

“If Bar is the example, no fear of that.” Bjorn snickered, “he hasn’t visited the old man even once this year. He was very happy that you returned his call last week, brother.”

“He is trying to be better but it is taking me a long time to accept his changes as permanent. Time will tell and I will not be forced to make amends faster than I am prepared.” Bar said bluntly.

Bjorn rubbed a large scar on his forearm absentmindedly. “You could just kick the shit out of him like you did me and be done with it.”

“It’s not the same. You are my brother and you were dumb but he was my father and should have protected me and instead tried to cause me even more pain than what I’d already gone through. You made a choice which caused horrible outcomes you were not expecting. He did so much worse.”

“Are you pregnant too?” Tabby questioned. “You’re very emotional.”

“Nope. I’m not ready. I’m still adjusting to three mates all with beasts. My own beast has threatened to eat our young if I bring one into this yet. Our new home isn’t even finished yet and we’re all bouncing between the cabin, Wilder’s penthouse in New York and Rafferty’s place in the Maldives. I’m so not ready.”

“Same,” River snorted. “I have one manchild. I don’t need to add a kid to it.”

Fawn chuckled as she patted her daughter’s back. “Enjoy your · time as a couple.”

“We are.” River laughed. “This is fun! I’m glad we decided to do this again this year.” She took a long drink of her wine.

“It’s been a year,” Dana said quietly, stið looking at Bar worriedly. “Not that I’m saying everything should be fixed or whatever but sitting here with all of us, it feels like while there has been growth and friendships and family, there is still complexity and turmoil and hurt.”

“Because that is what family is.” Jacqueline said quietly. “I went to my mother this morning. I hadn’t been there in a while. I brought back a companion for Beetle. However I asked her when all of this would get easier. When would we all gel and not step gugach other’s toes, even accidentally. When would w ill being
