Chapter 128
Elena lay in the hospital bed staring at the ceiling. Her pillow was wet from all the tears that had fallen. She couldn’t stop thinking about what Mose had said to her. The way he looked at her with those cold eyes. The way he said it was over between them like it meant nothing.
She touched her chest where it hurt the most. It felt like someone had reached inside and squeezed her heart until it stopped working properly. How could he just walk away like that?
The door opened and Mia rushed inside. Elena could tell by the look on her face that she had seen Mose leaving,
“Elena, what happened? What did he say to you?” Mia asked as she hurried to the bed.
Elena tried to speak but only sobs came out at first. She wiped her face with the back of her hand and tried again.
“He said he doesn’t want to be with me anymore,” Elena managed to get out between tears. “He said whatever was between us needed to end. Just like that. He looked at me in the eyes and said that, Mia.”
Mia felt her heart break for her friend. She sat down on the edge of the bed and pulled Elena into a careful hug.
“Don’t you listen to him for one second,” Mia said firmly. “Mose is just scared right now. When men get scared, they do the stupidest things you can imagine. Trust me on this one. I’m going to talk to him and find out what’s really going on.”
Elena wanted to believe Mia but the look in Mose’s eyes had been so final. Like he had already made up his mind and nothing could change it.
“He looked like he hated me,” Elena whispered.
“That man could never hate you. Never. He’s just trying to protect you from something and being an idiot about it. But I’m going to fix this, okay?”
Elena nodded even though she wasn’t sure anything could be fixed. Mia stayed with her through the whole night. She held Elena’s hand while she cried and brought her tissues and water. When Elena finally fell asleep, Mia sat in the chair next to her bed and watched over her.
The next morning, Mia stood up and stretched her back. She had barely slept but she had things to do.
“I need to go home and get some things,” she told Elena. “But I want you to listen to me very carefully. Don’t let anyone give you anything except the doctor. No food, no medicine, no drinks. Nothing. Do you understand me?”
Elena looked confused. “Why? What’s wrong? Is it that bad?”
“Just promise me. This is important.”
“I promise.”
Mia kissed Elena’s forehead and headed for the door.
When she got to the house, she could hear voices coming from the living room. But they were whispering again. Those two men never spoke in normal voices when they were together. It was like they thought someone was always listening to their conversations.

She walked toward the sound and found Stefan and Mose sitting close together talking in low voices. When they saw her, they both stopped talking immediately and looked guilty.
“Seriously, do you two have some kind of medical condition that makes it impossible to talk normally when together?” Mia asked playfully.
Stefan’s whole face changed when he saw her. He got up from his seat and walked over to her with that smile he only gave her. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close.
Then he kissed her softly on the lips before moving behind her and putting his arms around her waist. He buried his face in her neck and she could feel his breath warm against her skin.
“I missed you so much,” he said quietly against her neck.
Mia noticed that Mose turned his head away when Stefan kissed her. There was something painful in his expression like watching them together hurt him somehow.
Stefan walked her over to the couch and sat down, pulling her onto his lap. His hands settled around her waist right under her ribs. But the way he was holding her felt different. Like he was getting ready to keep her from getting up if she tried to.
That’s when Mia knew something bad was coming.
“Mose has something he needs to tell you,” Stefan said in that careful voice he used when he was about to say something she wouldn’t like.
Mia sat up straighter and looked back and forth between them. “Okay. Go ahead. I also have something to say to both of you.”
Mose looked at Stefan like he was asking for help. Stefan’s arms tightened a little bit around Mia’s waist.
“So…” Mose started and then stopped. He cleared his throat and tried again. “Hmm… so I think the best way to get the Santiagos to stop coming after me is to…” He looked at Stefan again.
“Die,” Stefan finished for him.
Mia’s eyes went wide and she tried to stand up but Stefan’s arms held her in place. Not tight enough to hurt her but tight enough that she knew he wasn’t going to let her go.
“What? I don’t understand what you mean. Die? How? Why?”
Stefan took a deep breath and Mia’s stomach dropped. She knew that sound. It was the sound he made right before he asked her to agree to something completely crazy.
“Baby….”
“Oh no. Don’t you dare ‘baby’ me right now,” Mia interrupted. “That’s the voice you use when you want me to agree to something insane.”
Stefan gave a sheepish smile but continued anyway.
“The Santiagos won’t stop hunting Mose until he’s dead. But before they kill him, they’re going to make him watch everyone he cares about die first. Slowly and painfully. Then they’ll take him and torture him until he tells

them who sent him to kill their family member. After that, they’ll cut him into pieces and leave parts of him all over the city.”
Both men nodded their heads at the same time like they had practiced it. The fear on Mia’s face was instant and real.
“There has to be another way,” she said quietly.
They both shook their heads no.
Mia felt sick. “Fine. Then you need to talk to Elena about this.”
But as soon as she said it, she noticed the way Stefan and Mose were looking at each other again. That look that meant they were hiding something else from her.
“When you say die, you mean fake your death, right?” she asked.
They nodded their heads
yes.
“Then why are you two staring at each other like you just planned to rob a bank or something?”
Neither of them said anything but Mia could feel the guilt coming off them in waves.
She felt Stefan’s arms get looser around her waist and her heart started beating faster.
“Is someone going to tell me what I need to know or are we going to sit here all day?”
“Baby…..
“I told you not to baby me! Just tell me what’s going on in your heads.”
Stefan actually looked a little scared of her which made Mose smile for just a second. It was funny to see the big scary Stefan acting like a little kid getting scolded. But Mia’s look made Mose’s smile disappear fast.
“Mose thinks the Santiagos are too smart,” Stefan said slowly. “He thinks they’ll know if we fake his death. So he wants to make it look real.”
“Mose thinks,” Mia repeated. “Which means you don’t agree with his plan?” Stefan just looked at her without saying anything.
“Go on. Tell me exactly how you plan to really die.”
“Baby…..” Stefan started but stopped when Mia glared at him. Okay, this wasn’t a time to ‘baby’ her. He gave her a nervous smile.
“Mose thinks a fire would be the most believable. We start a fire and he stays inside long enough to get burned and pass out from the smoke. Then we pull him out.”
