Chapter 155
“What are you saying?” Ethan asked, blinking rapidly like he hadn’t heard her correctly, as he stared at her across the candlelit table.
Elena took a deep breath, her heart pounding as she prepared to repeat the words that had just tumbled out of her mouth without permission.
“I’m saying I want you to be my husband,” she said clearly, looking at Ethan expectantly. “That’s what I’m saying.”
Ethan continued to stare at her like he had suddenly forgotten how to form words. His mouth opened and closed soundlessly, and Elena could practically see his brain trying to process what he had just heard.
Oh God, Elena thought, panic starting to creep into her chest. Maybe she was too forward. Maybe he’s not ready for this, and she’d just ruined everything.
“Oh,” she said quickly, her confidence wavering. “I thought you had intentions of making me your wife eventually. I’m sorry if I’m being too forward. I didn’t mean to assume…”
“What? No. No!” Ethan’s hands flew up to his perfectly styled hair, messing it up as he ran his fingers through it frantically.
He looked like he’s having a breakdown, Elena observed, her stomach sinking lower with each passing second.
“What am I saying?” Ethan continued, his words coming out in a rush. “What I mean is, yes, I absolutely want to marry you, Elena. I was just shocked because I thought you needed more time to figure out your feelings, you know? I thought we were taking things slow.”
Elena felt relief wash over her like cool water on a hot day. “I don’t need more time,” she said firmly. “I already know what I want, and I want to build a life with you.”
“Are you sure?” Ethan asked, leaning forward across the table. “Are you absolutely certain you’re ready for this? Because once we take this step, I’m never letting you go.”
Elena raised an eyebrow, a playful smile tugging at her lips. “Don’t you want to marry me?”
“I’ve wanted to marry you from the first day I laid eyes on you,” Ethan said without hesitation. “But traditionally, shouldn’t I be the one doing the proposing?”
Elena laughed, the sound light and carefree in the romantic atmosphere. “Who cares about tradition? Who cares who proposes first? As long as both of us want to be together, the rest doesn’t matter.”
He stared at her with something that looked like pure amazement on his face. “I’ve never met anyone like you,” he said, his voice filled with awe. “You continue to amaze me every single day. God, Elena, I can’t believe you’re
real.”
The way he was looking at her, made Elena feel like she’s some kind of miracle. She couldn’t help but wonder when she became someone who deserves to be looked at like that.
“I can’t believe you’re mine,” Ethan continued, his voice getting softer and more emotional. “I swear I love you,

Elena. Words can’t even begin to describe how much my heart beats for you. You’ve completely changed my world.”
As he spoke, he stood up from his chair and walked around to where she was sitting. She watched him approach, curious about what he was planning to do.
When he reached her side, he dropped down onto one knee, her eyes widened with surprise.
“What are you doing?” she asked quickly. “Ethan, you really don’t need to propose. I already told you….”
Her words died in her throat when she saw him pull out a small velvet ring box. Her hands flew to cover her mouth as he opened it, revealing the most beautiful diamond ring she had ever seen.
“Where did you…” she whispered, unable to finish the question.
“I bought this after the night we went to dinner,” Ethan said, understanding her unspoken question.
Her eyes widened even further, that long ago? she thought. Ethan nodded, reading her expression perfectly again.
Yes, he’d gotten it after she’d told him that night at the restaurant that she was ready to explore things with him, before she and Mia had issues.
He’s been carrying this around for weeks. He’d seen it online the next day and immediately thought of her. It felt like it was made specifically for her hand, so he bought it without even thinking twice about the price.
Since returning to the Meyer family, Ethan had been incredibly careful with his spending. He didn’t want to get used to a lifestyle he hadn’t earned himself.
His mother had always told him to spend the family money however he wanted because he was the heir, and his father had called multiple times encouraging him to enjoy his inheritance. But it had never felt right to Ethan.
However, when he saw the cost of this particular ring, he hadn’t hesitated for even a second. He had told himself he would keep it until the perfect moment arrived, carrying it with him everywhere he went.
And now, looking at Elena’s tear-filled eyes, he knew this was exactly the moment it had been waiting for.
“Oh, Ethan,” Elena said slowly, trying to hold back the tears that were threatening to spill over. The thought that he had wanted to marry her for so long, that he had been planning and hoping and waiting, made her incredibly emotional.
She’s afraid this man loves her more than she’d ever imagined possible, and it made something inside her chest feel like it’s expanding, like there’s more room for love than she knew she ever had.
She wanted to love him back with everything she had. She would love him with everything she had.
“You’re the first woman who has ever made me feel this way,” Ethan said, his voice nervous but his smile bright and genuine.
