THE STRESS OF THIS SITUATION COULDN’T BE GOOD
Chapter 161
Elena stood there in handcuffs as she watched Ethan walk away from her, his shoulders shaking with grief and shock. She wasn’t angry at him for leaving. No, she felt deep pity for him.
He had just lost his mother on what was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives. His wedding day had turned into a nightmare, and now he was dealing with the horrible reality that someone he loved was accused of killing the woman who gave birth to him.
How do you process something like that?* Elena thought as the police officers guided her toward their car. How do you choose between the woman you want to marry and your dead mother?
As she was being escorted out of the courthouse, Elena caught sight of Mia’s face through the car window. Her best friend looked terrified and heartbroken, tears streaming down her cheeks as she watched Elena being taken
away.
The only prayer Elena had in that moment was that Mia would be okay. The stress of this situation couldn’t be good for her or the baby.
Please don’t let this hurt her pregnancy, Elena prayed silently. Please let her be strong enough to handle this.
When they arrived at the police station, she was immediately taken to an interrogation room. The detective who questioned her was a middle-aged woman with tired eyes and a no-nonsense attitude.
“Elena Santos, you’re being questioned in connection with the death of Cassandra Meyer,” the detective began. “Do you understand why you’re here?”
Elena sat quietly, her hands folded in her lap. She had watched enough crime shows to know that anything she said could be twisted and used against her.
“I’m not saying anything until my lawyer arrives,” Elena said calmly.
“You don’t have a lawyer yet,” the detective pointed out. “We can provide you with a public defender if you can’t afford one.”
“Someone will come for me,” Elena said with quiet confidence. She knew Stefan wouldn’t abandon her. He would bring the best legal representation money could buy.
The detective asked her questions for another twenty minutes, but Elena remained silent. Finally, she was taken to a holding cell to wait.
The cell was small and cold, with a narrow bench and a toilet in the corner. She sat on the bench and tried not to think about how her wedding dress was now evidence in a murder investigation.
Almost two hours later, Elena heard familiar voices in the hallway. She looked up to see Stefan walking toward her cell, followed by James and a man in an expensive suit who was clearly a lawyer.
Stefan came to stand directly in front of her cell, his face full of concern and determination.
“How are you holding up?” he asked gently.

The first thing Elena needed to know was about Mia. “Is Mia okay? Please tell me the stress didn’t affect her or the baby.”
“She’s at home with Sienna and your mother,” Stefan assured her. “She wanted to come here, but I wouldn’t let her. I told her the best thing she could do for you right now was to stay calm and take care of herself.”
Elena nodded gratefully. “Good. Thank you for keeping her away from this mess.”
“What about Ethan?” Elena asked quietly, though she was afraid to hear the answer.
“He’s at the Meyer house,” Stefan said carefully. “He’s… dealing with funeral arrangements and family obligations.”
“Did he believe that I could have done this?” Elena asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Stefan didn’t answer immediately, and his silence told Elena everything she needed to know.
He’s not sure, Elena realized, feeling her heart break a little more. The man she was supposed to marry this morning isn’t sure if she’s capable of murder.
“Don’t worry about that right now,” Stefan said firmly. “We’re going to get you out of here soon. I promise.’
Elena looked up at him with tired but grateful eyes. “Thank you, Stefan. I don’t know what I would do without you.”
Her voice came out strained and hoarse from trying not to cry.
The lawyer Stefan had brought was one of the best criminal defense attorneys in the city. After an hour of paperwork and legal maneuvering, Elena was released on bail.
She was told she couldn’t leave the country and that she needed to be available for further questioning.
As they walked out of the police station, Stefan explained what had happened while she was being held.
“Cassandra was found dead in her car early this morning,” he said quietly.
“Someone called in a suspicious vehicle parked behind a restaurant downtown. When the police investigated, they found her body.”
Elena felt sick. Despite everything Cassandra had said to her, despite how cruel she had been, Elena had never wished her dead.
“The police think you’re the main suspect because of what happened at the salon two days ago,” Stefan continued.
Elena remembered that day clearly. She had gone to get her nails and lashes done for the wedding. Cassandra had shown up unexpectedly and had started making loud, nasty comments about Elena’s background and her family.
She’d had tried to ignore her at first, but when Cassandra started talking about her mother, and calling her a servant” and saying that Elena was “trailer trash trying to marry above her station,” Elena had finally snapped.
“I’m going to marry your son whether you like it or not,” she had said firmly. “And there’s absolutely nothing
do to stop it.”
