Chapter 165
After sitting in his car for what felt like forever, Ethan finally made his decision. He couldn’t drive away without knowing what his father was doing in this place. Too many questions would haunt him if he left now.
He parked his car behind an abandoned building where it wouldn’t be easily spotted and got out quietly. The night air was cold and still, and every small sound seemed amplified in the darkness.
He crept toward the alley where Samuel’s car had disappeared, staying close to the shadows of the buildings. His heart was beating so hard he was worried someone might actually be able to hear it.
As he got closer, he could see two figures standing near the far end of the alley. One was clearly his father – Ethan would recognize Samuel’s posture and expensive suit anywhere. The other was a man wearing a dark cap pulled low over his face.
Even from a distance, Ethan could tell they were having some kind of heated argument. Samuel was gesturing angrily with his hands, and the other man kept stepping closer in an aggressive way. Their body language screamed hostility and conflict.
Ethan wished he could hear what they were saying, but they were too far away and speaking too quietly. He could only catch occasional words carried on the wind – “money,” “problem,” and “finished.”
What kind of business was his Dad involved in that requires meeting in an abandoned alleys at night? He wondered, feeling more uneasy by the second.
The man in the cap looked familiar somehow, but he couldn’t place him. Maybe it was someone from his father’s business world, or someone he had seen at family gatherings over the years.
Deciding he needed to get closer to understand what was happening, Ethan carefully moved forward, using trees as cover. He made it about twenty feet closer before crouching behind a building.
Now he could see the two men more clearly, though he still couldn’t make out the stranger’s face completely. What he could see was that both men looked furious about something.
Samuel was shaking his head repeatedly, while the other man kept pointing his finger at Samuel’s chest in an accusatory way. At one point, the stranger grabbed Samuel’s arm, and Samuel jerked away violently.
Ethan raised his head slightly to get a better view of what was happening, but when he looked back toward where the two men had been standing, he could only see his father.
The other man had completely disappeared.
He looked around frantically, confused by what he was seeing. Where had the stranger gone? There was nowhere for someone to go that quickly without making noise.
He shifted his gaze back to his dad, who was now standing alone and staring down at the ground with an expression he had never seen before.
Following his father’s gaze downward, Ethan nearly fell backward in shock.
The man in the cap was lying motionless on the ground, his body twisted at an unnatural angle. Even from
where Ethan was hiding, he could see that the man wasn t moving at all. Wasn’t breathing.
Ethan clamped his hand over his mouth to keep from making any sound. His father had just killed someone right in front of him.
This isn’t real. This can’t be happening. His dad couldn’t have just murdered someone in cold blood, he thought desperately.
But as he watched, Samuel looked around carefully to make sure no one was watching, then knelt down beside the body. From his jacket pocket, he pulled out a white handkerchief and cleaned what looked like a gun.
Ethan watched in horrified fascination as Samuel wiped down the gun, cleaning off any fingerprints or evidence. His movements were calm and practiced, like he had done this before.
How many times has he done this before? He wondered, feeling sick to his stomach.
Samuel suddenly stopped what he was doing and lifted his head, looking around the like he had sensed something. Ethan held his breath and hid himself as flat as possible against the tree, praying his father wouldn’t see him.
For what felt like an eternity, Samuel stood perfectly still, listening and watching like he had sensed something. Ethan was convinced he was about to be discovered, and he had no idea what would happen to him if he father eventually discovered he was here. Would his father kill him too to keep this secret?
Finally, Samuel seemed satisfied that he was alone. He finished cleaning the gun, then began the grisly task of dragging the dead man’s body deep into the woods.
Ethan decided he had seen enough. Not just enough, he’d actually seen more than enough. He needed to get out of there before his father finished disposing of the evidence.
He paused, took out his phone and took what seemed like a thirty seconds video.
Though it wasn’t clear, but it was enough for now.
Moving as quietly as possible, he crept back toward where he had parked his car. Every shadow seemed haunting now, every small sound made him jump. He kept expecting to hear his father calling his name, or worse, to hear footsteps running after him.
But he made it to his car without being detected. His hands were shaking so badly he could barely get the key in the ignition, and when he finally started the engine, he drove away as fast as he dared without drawing
attention.
