Chapter 23
I kept a close eye on her as she slowly removed the contents of the
envelope with trembling fingers.
With every second that went by it seemed as though the weight of
whatever was inside this envelope was pressing down on the room.
The sight of it made Ava’s face go white. Her breathing became
labored and her eyes grew wide.
“Divorce papers.” She said in a whisper as though she was having
trouble believing what she was reading.
The shock was like a kick to the stomach. I was surprised by this. I
had no idea how to console her or what to say. Despite the fact that
we had both been taken by surprise I felt sorry for her.
Her brows furrowed as she absorbed the details of the papers which
she read silently. She was clearly having trouble processing the words
but with each line the bewilderment in her eyes grew.

When she had finished reading she looked at me with a blank

expression as she slowly lowered the paper her hand trembling.
“Liam Harris,” she whispered, her voice hardly audible. “But I cant
remember him. He is not someine I recall.”
When the documents reality set in she began to cry silently as it
filled her eyes. She asked in a tremulous voice her eyes full of hurt
and confusion.
“How could he have left me? I got divorced from my child’s father.”
It was unbearable to watch her in this state. She couldnt cope with
the suffering the uncertainty and the heartbreak on her own. I
hurried to be by her side and gave her a tight reassuring hug.
She first froze but then she melted into my arms and let out
heartbreaking yet gentle sobs.
“I dont understand, Alex” Her voice was frail as she whispered
through her tears. “Why did he leave me? Why did he do this?”
I tried to calm her by giving her a gentle hair stroke. “I dont know,
Ava. But we’ll have to find out. We will find out the truth about this I
assure you. Let me help you find Liam. We will find him if he holds
the secret to your memory. We will determine the cause of where you
were coming from before the incident.”

With her face buried in my chest, Ava clung to me as though the
physical touch would somehow take away the pain she was
experiencing.
Her voice was muffled against my shirt as she asked “What if I never
remember?.The idea of getting divorced and him leaving me is
extremely painful, Alex. What if I’m always left with this void in my
thoughts?”
As I tried to be the rock she needed in this time of despair I felt her
shudder in my arms and held her closer.
“You’re not alone, Ava” I whispered in a firm yet kind tone. “I’m here
to support you and won’t let you face this challenge alone. If you are
unable to recall we will find Liam together. You’ll have the answers
you require after we do. But know that youre not alone in whatever
happens.”
She slowed her sobs and I could feel her relax a little against me but
her eyes were still filled with sadness.
She whispered her voice heavy with grief, “If he was the father of my
child then… he really left me alone.I must not have had any
significance for him.”
“No, that’s not true” I maintained in a low but firm voice. “You were

always something, Ava. You are not to blame for whatever happened.
It also doesnt imply that you are unimportant. You’re important. You
and your baby matters. After you remember what happened you’ll
figure this out. However we’ll work together. This isn’t something
you’re alone with.”
Avas tear–streaked face was a mixture of doubt and hope as she gazed
