The Stand In Wife’s Revenge
Chapter 47
A moment later Alexander was at my side. Ava! I almost fell to the ground but his arms grabbed me. He looked at me his hands on my shoulders and his
eyes flashed with panic.
“Whats happening? Whats wrong?‘ I was having trouble breathing. My body was in excruciating pain that was spreading like wildfire. My breathing was
labored and my vision was fuzzy.
Alexander begged Ava stay with me in a terrified voice. But the agony was unbearable. I heard him calling my name as my body began to shake violently and
I started to feel like I was going into the dark. Then everything turned dark. —..
Coziness. That was my initial emotion. A cocoon–like warmth that enveloped me. The soft sheets made my fingers twitch as I took a slow breath the air
smelling slightly of herbs. I felt as though I had been floating in emptiness for hours my body was heavy and lethargic.
I blinked as I adapted to the rooms soft golden illumination. The gentle glow of a fireplace created shadows that moved across the walls. At first the area
was strange but then it became familiar.
I wasnt in this room. It belonged to Alexander. I tried to sit up and swallowed my throat feeling dry. My body throbbed with a dull ache but it was nothing in comparison to the excruciating pain I had experienced just before fainting.

I shifted a little and looked at him. With his back to me and his posture rigid Alexander stood a few feet away. His head was slightly bent as he gazed down at something while his hands were resting on a tables edge. I could tell he was thinking deeply even from behind. I felt a strange sensation in my chest
when I saw him like this so quiet and motionless.
He appeared to be troubled. Suddenly as though he could sense my eyes he turned. For an instant something flickered in his dark eyes as they met mine- relief worry or something else I couldnt quite put my finger on. His face then softened and his lips curled into a slow smile.
His voice carried a hint of relief as he said “You’re awake.”
Before I could reply he approached me and grabbed a steaming mug off the table. He pulled a chair to the side of the bed without thinking and sat down moving with ease but control as though he were taking care of everything.
He looked into my eyes and said “You scared me.”
I paused taking stock of my situation. ‘I’m tired‘ I muttered. “But I believe better..”
He clenched his jaw a little. He said “You fainted.. The doctor simply departed.”
I stared at him startled. “The doctor?”
His head nodded. ‘As soon as you passed out I called him. You’re pushing yourself too hard” he said. ‘Worrying about inappropriate things. Rest is essential
for both you and the unborn child.”
As soon as my breath caught in my throat my hand automatically went to my stomach. I pressed my palm against it desperate for reassurance but a sudden wave of fear overcame me. Then I sensed it. I am growing life inside of me. Relief swept through me and I let out a soft shaky breath. I briefly closed my eyes to take in the sensation and the knowledge that my child was still present and secure.
Alexander was observing me when I opened my eyes. His normally defensive expression had softened giving way to something I couldnt quite put my finger on. I gazed at the steam curling into the air from the mug in his hands.
“Whats that?” I inquired.

Chapter 47
A little he raised it. Something to assist…. I reached for it after hesitating. He gave it to me and even after I withdrew I could still feel the warmth of his skin as our fingers briefly touched,
The earthy aroma of the tea was both potent and soothing. After taking a tiny sip 1 felt warmth rise in my chest as the bitter taste lingered on my tongue, ‘I’m grateful I whispered.
Alexander watched me with a slight lean. Following a pause he said “You ought to have informed me that you werent feeling well. Rather you exerted yourself until you passed out.”
Something abrasive almost accusatory was in his voice. I felt the weight of his words as I glanced down at the mug.
I acknowledged I had no idea it was this bad. With a sigh he combed through his hair. “Ava you must stop harming yourself like this.”
Even though his voice was quieter now it was still firm. “You dont have to handle everything by yourself and I acknowledge that I am to blame for
everything that has happened but at least think about your child. Never again endanger his life.”
I swallowed not knowing how to react. There was silence in the room for a long time. The faint crackling of the fire was the only sound. I wanted to speak- to discuss what had transpired prior to my fainting. The disagreement, the conflict between us, the unspoken things.
My mouth opened but Alexander shook his head before I could say anything. “Not now” he said in a soft yet decisive tone. Later well discuss it further. You need to take a nap right now.”
Something in his eyes caused me to pause even though I was hesitant. He wasnt ignoring me. He was… tending to me. That was an odd insight. As I gazed at him I became aware of his apparent fatigue for the first time. It appeared as though he hadnt slept because of the faint shadow beneath his eyes.
His normally calm expression had softened and become more approachable. He was also still present. That thought for some reason caused my chest to tighten. When Alexander saw my prolonged gaze he raised an eyebrow,
“What?” I quickly averted my gaze and tightened my hold on the mug.
He smirked and gave a little shake of his head. “Ava get some rest.”
I should. It was obvious to me that I should. However I was not thinking peacefully as I reclined against the pillows. Because in spite of everything–my past
my uncertainty my confus
ion–I couldnt deny anything.
In his company I felt secure.
