He snatched the microphone back, took a deep breath to steady himself, and forced his voice into something resembling calm.
His eyes swept over the murmuring crowd and the sea of flashing cameras below. Desperately, his mind raced–he needed a story, something that could spin this disaster back in his favor.
‘Everyone, please–let’s all just take a moment.” He held up a hand, the picture of strained composure. “What Alexander said just now… it’s filled with malice. He was removed from the board following a serious breach of ethics, and he’s held a grudge ever since. Today was nothing but a targeted act of revenge.”
He paused, letting a carefully crafted look of pained honesty settle on his face. “That being said… it’s true. Sophia and I were narried several years ago, and we share a child.”
A wave of gasps and loud chatter rippled through the ballroom.
At the time, Sophia’s acting career was just beginning. To protect her path forward, we made the joint decision to keep our elationship and our family out of the spotlight. As for Ms. Harper…”
He glanced briefly toward where she had been standing earlier. “She knew everything from the very start. Moved by our situation ind out of the kindness of her heart, she offered to help–to let us use her name publicly so we could protect our privacy. In return, provided her with a position at Ashford Group.”
He straightened his shoulders, his tone shifting into something more declarative. “Over all these years, my feelings for her have never been anything but gratitude and respect. Now, to end the speculation and the pain it’s caused Sophia, Ms. Harper has chosen to leave Havenbrook for a while, to live her life freely. And finally… finally I can honor the promise I made long ago.”
His gaze grew tender, directed toward the far end of the lavish hall. “So today, in front of all of you, I want to make it official. The only woman I have ever loved, the only partner I will ever claim is Sophia Myers.”
On cue, the tall, gilt–edged doors at the opposite end of the room swung open slowly.
There stood Sophia, radiant under the focused beam of a spotlight, draped in a gown that probably cost more than some people’s cars. Even amid the confused buzzing and side conversations, the sight of her–poised, glamorous, almost cinematic–drew waves of unmistakable envy from the crowd. It was the exact reaction she’d hoped for.
she stepped onto the plush crimson runner, each movement measured and graceful. Outwardly calm, she fought the urge to rush -every fiber of her being wanted to sprint to the other end, to slide that massive diamond onto her finger to finally become Lucas‘ vife in the eyes of the world. This was the finish line.
Closer, almost there…
She could see Lucas now, his expression soft, his eyes fixed on hers.
But just as she reached the midpoint of the carpet, the large LED screen behind Lucas–which had been showing soft, romantic visuals–flickered violently.
A sharp crackle of static pierced the air, followed by Alexander’s voice, amplified and dripping with mockery, echoing through the entire space.
“Feeling pretty proud of yourself, aren’t you, Lucas?” The screen now showed Alexander’s smirking face, blown up to grotesque proportions. “You think Sophia’s your untouched saint? Your devoted mother of your child?”

His grin widerred. “Wett, here’s a news flash–your ‘perfect‘ Sophia has been playing you for years!”
The screen flashed, and then it began–a cascading waterfall of photos.

Shot after shot appeared: Sophia entering hotels with different men, wrapped in intimate embraces, laughing over cocktails… and then, more graphic ones, explicit and crude, the kind that made people in the crowd avert their eyes or gasp in shock,
Lucas‘ face went pale.
The men in the pictures changed rapidly–faces he didn’t recognize, strangers. Then his eyes locked onto one image, and his blood ran cold.
He knew that man.
It was Harvey. The driver he’d fired months ago.
For Sophia, the photos felt like being drenched in public filth right there in the middle of her triumph. Her composure shattered.
“Turn it off! Somebody kill the screen–now!” she shrieked, her voice raw and unrecognizable. All traces of the elegant actress were gone, replaced by panicked, frantic rage.
At that moment, one of Lucas‘ senior security advisors hurried onto the stage, his face ashen. He leaned close, speaking rapidly into Lucas‘ ear. “Sir, it’s not just here. We’ve lost control of the feed. Every major digital billboard across downtown Havenbrook- they’re all broadcasting this. Live.”
A cold dread shot down Lucas‘ spine.
And then, pieces began clicking horribly into place in his mind.
Sophia and Harvey… it hadn’t started that night they were caught. It had been going on long before.
Which meant that time he’d walked in on them… she hadn’t been set up. She’d lied straight to his face. She’d framed Riley, gotten caught in her own trap, and then spun that tearful story about Alexander forcing her, manipulating him into cutting Alexander loose.
