Riley stood there, letting the revelation sink in.
So there was no mystery girl. No heartbreak, No unrequited love story.

Colin hadn’t wanted Audrey to know he’d gotten hurt standing up for her. That he’d missed the biggest game of his life because of it. That he’d walked away from a dream he’d once treated like oxygen.
So he d made up some dumb story. Something ridiculous enough to sound like him. And just like that, he’d buried the whole thing under a throwaway excuse.
“So,” Riley said, looking at Audrey, who seemed completely unmoored, “there was never a girl he liked? That was just a cover?”
Audrey’s lips moved, but nothing came out.
She looked like she wanted to bolt onto the field and demand answers from Colin. Or call Justin right there and make him confirm every word. But her feet stayed locked to the ground.
The sheer absurdity of it drowned her.
But old habits died hard. The pride. The reflexive denial. She couldn’t just accept it.
Even through the shock, she forced out a defense. “Okay, fine. Even if that girl was made up, he’s still gone through plenty of girlfriends over the years. That part’s real.”
“And he’s Justin’s best friend. Sticking up for me is just what friends do. It’s not that big a deal!” Her words came faster and faster, like speed alone could outrun the chaos in her chest. “He got hurt. It was an accident. I didn’t ask him to go. Worst case, I’ll take him out for a nice dinner to say thanks. That works, right?”
Audrey crossed her arms and lifted her chin, every inch the picture of defiance.
But the red creeping into her eyes and the way her fingers dug into her sleeves told a different story.
Sebastian didn’t look surprised by any of it.
He answered flatly, “Fine. I just didn’t want you to be kept in the dark.”
He turned and sat down on the bench beside Riley, draping his arms over the backrest and letting his gaze drift back to the chaos on the field.
Audrey stood frozen.
Then it came back. Piece by piece.
Sophomore year, she had dated a music major who was a real sweet talker. When she found out he was cheating her pride ade her dump him on the spot. She then went back to her dorm, hugged a pillow, and cried all night before calling until she could barely breathe.
And she remembered, two days later, Justin calling to tell her Colin had taken a fall Said he’d tripped down some shes playing ball and messed up his leg. He was laid up in the hospital.
She’d brought fruit. She’d walked in and seen him there with his lepin a heavy cast looking i

and fed her some bull about dodging a crazy freshman who wouldn’t leave him alone.
Looking back now, every bit of that act had cracks→
And she’d bought it. For years.
She’d even turned it into a joke and told other people like it was entertainment.
“How is this real…” Audrey murmured to herself, over and over, so quietly that only she could hear.
The next thirty minutes of game time crawled by under the weight of that thick, strange silence.
When the final whistle blew, Riley actually exhaled in relief.
