Chapter 418 The Reason Colin Got Hurt
Riley pulled her gaze back and turned to Sebastian, who was still watching the field. She ask quietly, “Did he want to play soccer? Back in the day?”
Before Sebastian could answer, Audrey jumped in, buzzing with enthusiasm.
“Oh, I know all about this! Colin was the star forward on his college team. Absolute starter. F was actually kind of a name around the university district back then. He talked about his dream nonstop. Drove his grandpa crazy, yelling about how he wasn’t gonna take over the family business after graduation. He wanted to start a pro soccer club. Be the owner and the star player.”
Audrey was on a roll now.
Riley watched Colin on the field, throwing himself into tackles with guys half his size, fightin for every ball. She couldn’t figure it out. The Peterson family had more than enough money back a club. It wouldn’t have been hard.
“So then what happened?” Riley asked.
“So then,” Audrey’s voice softened with something like regret, “he got hurt. Right before the regional finals for the national college league. Bad injury. Lots of stitches in his leg. Season over, just like that. After that, he was a different person. Never touched a soccer ball again. Wouldn’t even let anyone bring it up. That whole club dream just died right there.”
Riley looked at Audrey, curious. “You seem to know a lot about him. Did you two go to the same school?”
“No.” Audrey shook her head and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “But our schools were one street apart. When their team had games, girls from my school would show up to watch. I was one of them. Justin and he were childhood friends, so we got to know each other. even asked him once. I said, ‘Colin, you finally found something you actually love. How can you just give it up like that? Seems like such a waste.“”
Audrey paused, and whatever memory surfaced made the corner of her mouth twitch smile was a little sly.
The
“He was lying in a hospital bed, looking totally pathetic. One leg in a cast. He gave me this slacker grin and said he was done. Said it wasn’t worth it anymore. Said the whole reason he’d been killing himself on the field was to impress some girl he liked. But she’d already fallen for someone else. Didn’t even glance his way. Instead, she was into some artsy piano player from the school across the street. He said, if he couldn’t even make it to the finals, who was he supposed to show off for? No point.”

Audrey laughed as she finished the story. “I still remember the way he looked. He was to crushed, but he had to act like he didn’t care. Said he only pushed that hard because of s girl, and now that the girl was gone, so was the motivation. Can you believe that guy?”
“And after that, he just gave up on her?” Riley asked.
“Who knows.” Audrey shrugged and picked up the coffee Colin had drunk from. She hesi then set it back down with a look of pure disgust. “He never mentioned that so–called cru again. But don’t go thinking he’s some tragic romantic. These past few years, he’s gone th girlfriends. I’ve lost count. Honestly, you could put together two full soccer teams with su
Audrey was still delivering her light, mocking summary of Colin’s love life when Sebastia who’d been watching the field the whole time, finally spoke.
“Audrey. The reason Colin got hurt back then…” Sebastian pulled his gaze off Colin’s figure tearing across the grass and turned slowly to face her. “It was that Justin told him you’d jus been dumped by your boyfriend at the time. And that you’d been crying on the phone for long time.”
Audrey’s smile froze.
The noise around them seemed to pull back, everything going distant except the sound of Sebastian’s voice.
“He had the finals the next day. But that night he went with Justin to find the guy. To stand u for you. Things got heated on the street. A motorcycle came out of nowhere, and he had to dodge it. He got hit.”
“What?!” Audrey’s eyes went huge. Her brain couldn’t process what she’d just heard.
