“She knew today was your first day at Harper Group and that you’d be wrecked. She made m promise to take care of you.”

Sebastian gazed into Riley’s eyes. Weary but sharp, her stubborn streak never fading. His hea softened at the sight.

He knew exactly how much pressure she’d been under today, and he knew that steel spine of hers wouldn’t let her admit when she was running on empty.

He guided her into a chair with gentle hands.

“All you have to do is wait. Eat first. Everything else can wait.”

Riley had been running on adrenaline all day, wound so tight she hadn’t noticed how far her limit she’d gone. Now the exhaustion hit her all at once, a wave she didn’t have the streng to fight.

She sat, picked up her fork, and took a bite. Only then did she realize she was starving.

The meal settled into her, warm and grounding. Her stomach filled, and the tension in her shoulders started to ease.

Afterward, habit pulled her toward the study. The project files she’d brought home were still sitting in her bag, waiting.

Sebastian stopped her before she got there.

“Work never runs out.” He walked out of the kitchen holding two mugs of warm milk and pressed one into her hands. “You’ve been running on fumes all day. Even if you work through the night, you won’t finish everything. Come take a walk with me. Around the neighborhood. Clear your head.”

She wrapped her hands around the mug, the warmth seeping into her palms, and she let out a small sigh and gave in.

“Fine.” A tired smile tugged at her mouth, and the hard lines between her brows finally softened. “Give me a minute. I’ll shower first.”

Half an hour later, she came out in comfortable lounge clothes, her hair loose and still damp a the ends.

Sebastian was waiting in the living room. He stood when he saw her, reached for her hand

without a second thought, and laced his fingers through hers.

“Let’s go.”

It was the first time Riley had actually walked through the neighborhood since moving in.

Night had fully fallen over Nexopolis, yet this upscale enclave remained immaculately maintained. Tree-lined paths wound through the luxury estate, filling the air with floral fragrance. Muted garden lamps lined every route. Even a simple evening walk felt straight ou of a glossy magazine.

Other residents were out too, walking dogs, jogging, or drifting along in quiet conversation lik them.

Riley let Sebastian hold her hand and took in the scene around her. Everything was calm and

far beautiful, and for a moment, the weight of the day felt very away.

They’d reached a small plaza with a fountain when a voice called out from the side.

“Well, Mr. Torres! What are the odds?”

Riley and Sebastian turned toward the sound. A heavyset man in his fifties, dressed in a casua tracksuit, was walking toward them with a broad grin.

He had the shrewd, polished look of a man who’d spent his life doing deals, and when his eye landed on Riley, she caught the unmistakable flicker of assessment.

“Mr. Anderson,” Sebastian spoke in a polite, thoroughly neutral tone. Their paths had crossed in business, yet nothing more.

David Anderson’s gaze lingered on Riley for a few seconds, and his smile turned knowing. He had the air of an old hand who’d seen it all and wasn’t shy about it. “Now this is a rare sight. First time I’ve ever seen you out for a walk with a girlfriend, Mr. Torres.”

The words had barely left his mouth when Riley felt Sebastian tense beside her.

She almost laughed. He hated people poking into his personal life, and as his wife, she figured it was her job to set the record straight in situations like this.

So she corrected David, her voice perfectly matter-of-fact, “Not girlfriend.” She tipped her chi up, a small, precise smile curving her lips. “Wife.”
