“Logan! Have you lost your goddamn mind?!” Noah’s voice lashed him through the receiver. “Who gave you
the nerve to go after her on her first day? Did you stop for one second to think about who you’re dealing with? This company still belongs to the Harper family, in case you forgot! Riley is the chairman’s daughter! You think you can take her on? You?!”
squeeze
Logan stood there absorbing the lashing, his mouth opening and closing as he tried to in a word. “I was just trying to fight for everyone. She came in and snatched the Wharfbrook project-”
“Fight for what?!” Noah cut him off. “You think that’s yours to fight for? You absolute idiot! You actually believed rounding up a few deadweights would threaten her? You walked straight into a woodchipper and called it a strategy! Well, congratulations. You got yourself fired, and you deserved every bit of it. Don’t call me again.”
The line went dead.
Logan stood frozen, the phone still pressed to his ear, looking like a man who’d just been kicked into a ditch and left there.
When he finally dragged himself back into the office, the sight waiting for him was even worse.
Vincent had already summoned two uniformed security guards. They hadn’t done anything yet, but their presence alone pressed down on the room like a physical weight.
Vincent was handing printed transition checklists to the other four, whose faces had gone the same shade of gray, and his tone hadn’t changed in the slightest. “To ensure the security of company property and information, security personnel will accompany you through the entire handover process.”
This wasn’t a transition. This was an escort.
The farce was finally over.
When the clock crept toward six, Riley closed her last file and glanced at her watch. She decided to leave on time.
She packed up her things, grabbed her bag, and stepped out of her office-only to find the floor outside still blazing with lights. Most of her staff were still at their desks, their keyboards clattering away, and not a single one of them was showing any sign of heading home.
“Why haven’t you left yet?” She stopped beside the nearest employee, a young woman who immediately jumped to her feet.

She replied nervously, “Ms. Harper! We wanted to get a little more done. There are will some details on our projects we’d like to wrap up.”
A chorus of nods followed her words.
Riley’s brow furrowed. Back in Havenbrook, labor laws were strict, and unnecessary overtime had to be justified because the company had to pay a premium for it. The focus was on efficiency per hour, not hours clocked.
But Nexopolis ran on an entirely different workplace culture. Companies paid lip service to work-life balance while quietly encouraging uncompensated overtime, judging employees dedication by how long they stayed after work. This created a toxic grind culture that benefited no one at all.
She didn’t want her department rotting from the inside with burnout and quiet resentment.
Riley said, “Go home.”
The clatter of keyboards stopped, and every head lifted, staring at her in confusion.
She swept her gaze across the room. “Efficiency comes first, not pointless overtime. Starting tomorrow, everyone will list their daily tasks and set priorities first thing in the morning— work smarter, not harder. Barring genuine emergencies, all staff must leave on time each day. Go home, rest, and spend time with your families, and come back fully recharged.”
She didn’t linger after that. She turned and headed straight for the elevator.
She was gone, but her words hit the room like a depth charge.
Staff exchanged glances. Disbelief flickered, shifting to wary hope that soon grew
firm.
A leader who pushed for results yet refused to drain staff’s personal time. The outlook felt far brighter than it had that morning.
Riley had told her team not to work late, but she carried a stack of project files home herself. She planned to dig into them after dinner.
Based on past experience, Sebastian would be even busier than she was and probably wouldn’t be back yet. She figured she could hit the study, go through some documents, and wait for him to come home before they ate together.
