Chapter 445 Logan Plays the Wronged Victim

Chapter 445 Logan Plays the Wronged Victim

Riley shook his hand briefly, relaxed and unruffled.

David pulled back and said, “Well, Mrs. Torres, Mr. Torres, I’ll leave you two to your evening. Don’t let me interrupt.

He flashed a knowing smile and made himself scarce.

Once he was out of sight, Riley laughed and turned to Sebastian. “What, did I scare you?”

Sebastian squeezed her hand, shaking his head with an indulgent smile.

He paused and filled her in. “That was David Anderson. He runs a company over in Wharfbrook.”

The name Wharfbrook snagged on something in Riley’s memory, but she was too relaxed to chase it. In this neighborhood, everyone was worth nine figures. She wasn’t about to memorize them all.

They kept walking, the night breeze brushing past.

Riley’s mood lifted as she leaned into his shoulder, soaking up the quiet.

They took their time looping through the neighborhood and only headed back when they both felt loose and easy.

Back home, Riley checked the time. The walk had worked the knots out of her shoulders, but the files she’d brought home were still nagging at her. She made a quick call.

“I’m gonna hit the study for a bit,” she told Sebastian. “I need to double-check a few things.”

He gave her a look-half exasperated, half fond-but he didn’t argue. He walked over and kissed her forehead.

“Fine. Don’t stay up too late.” His voice was soft. “I’ll be next door. Won’t bother you.”

She nodded and headed for the study.

Sebastian disappeared into the game room, and they each settled into their own corner for the night.

The next morning, Riley had barely walked into her office when Zavier’s assistant knocked.

He said respectfully, “Ms. Harper, Mr. Zavier Harper wants to see you in his office.”

Riley had a solid guess at what this was about, but her face gave nothing away. She nodded, squared away her files, and followed the assistant out.

She pushed open the door and clocked the two extra bodies immediately. Noah, fresh from the boardroom, and Logan, his face set in full wounded-puppy mode.

Logan was in his thirties, and there he sat on the couch across from Zavier like a kid who’d scraped his knee, selling his sob story for all he was worth.

“Mr. Harper, I’ve put years into this company. Everything I did was for the department, for the company’s benefit. Yesterday, I was just worried about the Wharfbrook project. I wanted to help. So I spoke up, maybe a little too bluntly, and the next thing I know, Ms. Harper fires me. She fired several of our veteran people right along with me.”

He cranked the emotion higher, dragging his fellow casualties into the spotlight.

“Mr. Harper, firing me-fine. I can take it. My family’s comfortable. But some of those colleagues who quit with me, they’re not in the same boat. They’ve got kids, mortgages, and car payments. Getting tossed out with no warning, no time to transition-what are they supposed to do? How do their families eat? Ms. Harper didn’t think about any of that. It was cold.”

Logan sneaked a look at Riley as he spoke. Her face was unreadable, and that blank calm only made his stomach sink faster. But he’d already committed to the act, so he clenched his jaw and kept going.

Noah sat off to the side in stony silence.

He’d wanted zero part in this disaster. Logan had spent years bulldozing through the marketing department, pissing off everyone in sight. Noah had ripped into him yesterday and figured that was the end of it.

But the idiot had run to his father first thing in the morning, bawling and twisting the whole story until it sounded like Riley had persecuted him for sport. His father, snowed by the tears, had forced Noah to show up and play backup.
