"Because she does not want to talk to me right now," Max replied.
Felicia had just picked up Anne's moisturizer. She was preparing to rub it onto her daughter's cheeks when she overheard Max's voice through the speaker. Anne froze for a second before letting out a soft hmph. "You definitely did something bad and made Mom mad. You have to apologize to her, Dad."
"And how exactly should I apologize, Anne?" Max asked.
Anne turned her large, round eyes toward her mother. Felicia dabbed a bit of lotion onto the back of her hand and smiled. "Let’s get your face moisturized first."
Ignoring her father's question entirely, Anne placed her smart-watch on the coffee table and trotted over to her mother. She tilted her little head up and obediently closed her eyes. Felicia gently dotted the cream across Anne's face with her fingertips before massaging it in evenly. Her daughter's cheeks were so soft and plump that Felicia could not resist giving one a gentle pinch. "How did you get so pretty?"
Anne flashed a bright, toothy smile. "Because mom is pretty. I look just like you." She leaned affectionately against Felicia's chest, nuzzling her. "You smell so good, Mom. I love how you smell."
Left entirely abandoned on the other end of the line, Max sat in silence, listening to the warm, peaceful exchange between mother and daughter. The hospital lobby was agonizingly quiet at this hour, making his isolation feel even sharper as he sat there alone.
Felicia eventually took Anne downstairs, thoroughly banishing Max from her mind. Left with no other choice, Max sighed, hung up the phone, collected his prescribed medication, and finally left the hospital.
Of course, Anne had not forgotten her father's plea. Later that night, as Felicia was tucking her into bed, Anne gazed up at her. "Mom, how exactly did Dad make you so mad?"
Felicia patted Anne's back soothingly. "It is grown-up stuff. You would not understand just yet."
The following day was Saturday. Since Anne's private tutoring sessions were not until the afternoon, there was no need to wake up early. Felicia finally rolled out of bed at nine o'clock. After freshening up, she headed downstairs for breakfast.
In the living room, Darin was balancing Sean in one arm while dragging a stroller toward the front door with the other. Normally, whenever Greg was free on the weekends, he handled childcare duties. Now that Greg was busy with his new romance, and Darin was conveniently staying at the house, Sean had gravitated toward him. Darin had essentially become the new designated babysitter.
Seeing Felicia and Anne descend the stairs, Darin walked back into the living room with Sean. "You two are finally up."
"Felicia, Anne," Sean cheered happily.
Darin set the toddler down, and Sean immediately waddled over to them. He pointed a chubby finger playfully. "Felicia and Anne are sleepyheads."
