She watched Kennedy making his way over. He’d been tracking her every move all night. Taking a breath, she calmed herself and started to stand. Kennedy hurried forward, reaching out as if to steady her. The second his hand got close, Felicia lifted her own, a silent but clear stop right there. Kennedy’s arm froze. His face flickered with awkwardness, but he managed to collect himself. “Did you hurt your foot, Evelynn? I can get someone to bring you a bandage.”

“That won’t be necessary, but thank you, Mr. Rock. I’ve already asked a staff member to get one for me.”

“Alright, good.”

He hesitated, then said, “By the way, I didn’t get a chance to ask for your contact info last time. Would it be alright to exchange numbers today?” His tone was perfectly polite.

Felicia glanced at her phone, her answer quick and even. “Sorry, I don’t give out my personal number. If we end up working together in the future, we can exchange information then.”

Kennedy definitely noticed how distant she was being. It stung, especially when she was so much warmer with Anthony and the others. He felt a twinge of irritation. Still, he just smiled and nodded. “Fair enough.”

Trying to keep it light, he added, “You seem to get along really well with Mr. Milman.”

Felicia only hummed in response.

“What are you talking about?” Anthony’s voice cut through the tension.

Kennedy turned. Anthony and Jeremy were strolling over. Anthony glanced at Kennedy, a playful edge in his voice. “Dinner’s over, but you’re still here chatting with Evelynn. You must be pretty eager to learn, huh, Kennedy?”

The Rock family was also one of the most influential in the Capital. Kennedy’s father had always been close with Brandon, so Kennedy and Max had grown up together. Kennedy’s dad had asked Max to show him the ropes, and over the years, Kennedy had inherited part of the family business, mostly because of Max’s help. In truth, Kennedy’s business skills were pretty average, and he leaned on Max for pretty much everything. Max was like a real brother to him, maybe even closer.

Anthony’s words were a clear dig at Kennedy’s lack of ability.

Kennedy had just managed to calm down, but Anthony’s words pushed him over the edge. “Anthony!” He lunged forward, grabbing Anthony by the collar, his fist raised, ready to swing.

“Kennedy!” Max’s voice was cold, cutting through the moment.

Kennedy froze mid-punch, seething. He let his arm drop and released Anthony.

Max stepped forward, his eyes sharp as ice. He looked at Anthony, then his gaze landed on Felicia, still sitting on the bench.

Felicia felt his eyes on her. Her heart squeezed tight, but she didn’t look away. She met his stare, steady and unflinching.
