The start of the week was a blur, every hour blocked out by meetings and deadlines. When Felicia glanced at her calendar and saw the interview scheduled for Tuesday morning, her head started to throb. But there was no getting out of it. Work was work.

It just seemed like she and Max were never meant to get along. Even if she reinvented herself completely, they still couldn’t have a normal conversation. Whatever. Some things you just had to deal with head-on. She had made it through worse over the years. This was nothing to be afraid of.

On Monday night she met Jeremy for dinner. Mostly, they needed to talk about a project, but, of course, Max happened to show up at the same restaurant. Sometimes she wondered if the universe was trying to mess with her. Back when she wanted to see him, he was impossible to find. Now, she tried to avoid him, and he just kept popping up.

At least this time, it was just a passing encounter. Max nodded at Jeremy, and Felicia quickly looked away, but she could feel his cold, piercing stare as he walked by. He probably hated her now.

When Max and his group had left, Jeremy noticed how tense she looked. “Are you okay?”

Felicia forced a calm expression. “Yeah, I just saw someone I’d rather not see.”

Jeremy shrugged. “You’ll probably run into him again. Just think of him as your biggest hurdle. If you can face him calmly, everything else will feel easy by comparison.”

She looked at him, then cracked a smile. “You make it sound so simple.”

“I know you can do it,” he told her.

“I’ll try,” she said, a little more confident.

She tried to steady her breathing and followed the assistant to wait in the lounge. Twenty minutes later, the assistant returned.

“Evelynn, you may come in now.”

Felicia had managed to calm herself by then. She stood, nodded, and followed the assistant to the CEO’s office. As the door opened, the sweet scent of a child’s lotion and snacks hit her, warm and familiar.

“Please, come in.”
