Felicia stepped out of the office and glanced back over her shoulder. She caught a glimpse of Max as he tore open the envelope and read the summons, his expression icy and detached, a mocking smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

“Evelynn, let me show you my secret base.”

Felicia’s eyes softened. “Secret base? What secret base?”

“You’ll see when we get there.”

She quickly let the photographer and crew know to wait for her downstairs, then followed Anne through a hallway beside the children’s play area and up a flight of stairs. This part of the office had been completely redone.

Upstairs, Anne entered a passcode with practiced ease and pushed open the door.

Felicia stopped in her tracks, stunned. The room was like a miniature botanical garden, kept at the perfect temperature. Holographic projections made it feel like an actual forest, with rare flowers and plants everywhere, rock gardens, a pond filled with goldfish swimming lazily, and birds flitting through the branches overhead.

Anne pulled Felicia deeper inside.

Felicia remembered Luke telling her that Max had transferred half his assets to Anne, but standing here, seeing all this, she realized just how much Max adored Anne. Max could give everything to the people he cared about, but to everyone else, he was cold as stone.

Anne led her to a bed of flowers. “Evelynn, want to make flower crowns with me?”

Felicia knelt down beside her, her voice gentle. “Anne, can I give you a hug?”

Anne grinned. “Of course.”

She threw her arms around Felicia’s neck and snuggled into her. Felicia hugged her daughter tight, feeling the warmth of her small body and breathing in her sweet, milky scent. Emotions crashed over her so fast she had to blink back tears. This was her daughter, the little girl who had kept her company through so many lonely nights before she was born.

While they were together, the man in the president’s office watched everything through the surveillance feed. His eyes were dark and impossible to read as he stared at the two of them on the screen.

“Daddy, Daddy.”

Andrea glanced at the door and saw Anne run in, a beautiful flower crown perched on her head. She was about to greet Anne when she noticed Felicia walking in behind her.

Andrea’s smile froze for a moment.

Felicia saw her, too. Their eyes met, but Felicia’s face stayed calm. She offered a small, polite smile.

“Aunt Andrea, when did you get here?” Anne asked, looking a little surprised.

Andrea walked over and bent down, her smile warm again. “I just got here, sweetheart. I brought you lunch. Your flower crown is beautiful.”
