Max spoke softly. “If she doesn’t want to stay for lunch, Anne, should Daddy make her do it just for you?”

Anne looked up at her dad, searching his face for an answer. “What if she ends up upset with you because of it?” he asked.

Anne lowered her head and stayed quiet for a long moment. “Evelynn wouldn’t get mad at me,” she finally said, but her words sounded weak, as if she wasn’t sure herself. Evelynn did told her she was busy with work. Now, thinking back, if she really had pushed Evelynn to stay, would Evelynn have been unhappy? The idea that Evelynn might not like her left Anne with a strange, heavy feeling in her chest.

That’s when Tatiana’s voice called from outside. “Come on, let’s go get breakfast.” Anne followed her dad out of the room.

At the dining table, she saw her grandparents and called out sweetly, “Grandpa, Grandma!” Brandon scooped her up into a hug. “How about you stay with us for a couple of days, Anne?”

Felicia woke up feeling groggy, her head spinning. She sat up slowly, pulled off the covers, and headed to the bathroom. After washing up and sipping some hot water, she felt a little steadier.

When the doorbell rang, Felicia went to answer it and found Jeremy at the door, holding a bag of breakfast. He had brought her home last night to her apartment at Oakridge Estate. He actually owned a big place in the same complex.

“Morning,” she greeted him.

Jeremy lifted the bag. “I brought you breakfast.”

Felicia stepped aside, letting him in. He set the food on the dining table and asked, “How are you feeling now? Anywhere uncomfortable?”

“At least it shows Max isn’t completely heartless,” Jeremy said quietly.

“It depends on who you are, I guess. I just hope he’s good to Anne.”

After a night’s rest, Felicia felt calmer. Just getting a gift from her daughter and being able to hug her had been enough for her.

After breakfast, when Felicia was ready, Jeremy drove her to work. Her own car was still at the bar, so she’d have to pick it up after her shift.
