“Of course he’s reliable,” Simon said, sounding sure of himself. “Evelynn landed the director’s seat, and you really think Jett’s okay with it? He’s just waiting for a chance to trip her up. Jeremy thinks the world of her, so if this project tanks, Evelynn loses her credibility. No way she keeps that job.”

“But now Mr. Hawthorne stepped in and called everything off. Something’s not right.” The director’s tone shifted as a new worry came to mind. “Unless Evelynn already knows Jett’s plan. Maybe she’s just playing along and using him.”

Simon’s face changed, worry flickering in his eyes.

Felicia was in her office, buried in paperwork. She wasn’t just here at Autumnridge College to close the Westfield Clinical Research deal. She also needed to review the business records Peter had sent over from the past two years.

She turned the pages one by one, her expression growing darker with each line she read. She didn’t say a word.

The office was so quiet, it felt like time had stopped.

Peter waited in front of her desk, shifting his weight from foot to foot, looking more nervous by the second.

Then there was a knock at the door.

Jett stepped inside, immediately picking up on the tense mood. Peter nodded at him politely.
