“Jeremy’s in Northwick right now,” Darin said. “No guarantee we’ll get what we want. Taking something out from under his grasp is never easy.”
“At least it’s making him sweat,” Max replied, his tone cool.
“I wanted to ask you something.”
Max met his eyes. “What is it?”
Darin hesitated for a moment, then asked, “What do you really want with Andrea?”
Max was quiet, thinking it over. “Right now, I have to consider Anne. If she can accept Andrea, that’s all that matters to me.”
Darin’s expression shifted, a little more serious. “And if Anne can’t?”
Max looked out the window. Sunlight spilled across his face, but his dark eyes gave nothing away. For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Darin sighed. “You never divorced your wife because you wanted Anne to have a real family, isn’t that right?” These days, nothing seemed more important to Max than his daughter.
Max didn’t confirm or deny it. “We’ll figure it out when the time comes.”
That night, Felicia sat at her desk, scrolling through lecture notes. Her phone buzzed suddenly. She glanced at the screen, and her heart squeezed tight when she saw the name. She picked up, pressed the phone to her ear.
“Evelynn,” Anne’s small voice came through.
Felicia felt a wave of longing and happiness all at once. “Anne,” she said softly.
“Am I bothering you, Evelynn?”
“No, not at all. I’m free. What have you been up to lately?”
Anne didn’t mention being sick. She only said she hadn’t called because she was worried about interrupting Felicia’s work.
Felicia knew the real reason. Anne just didn’t want her to worry. Her daughter was thoughtful like that, always so grown-up for her age. Every time Felicia saw Yara, she thought of Anne. Just hearing her voice now made everything feel a little lighter.
Anne knew her grandma liked Aunt Andrea but didn’t like Evelynn, so she could never make calls to Evelynn when her grandma was around. Today, she missed Evelynn so much she’d sent her grandmother off on a little errand, just so she could sneak in a quick call.
Tatiana didn’t push it. “Your daddy will be here in a few days.”
...
Felicia leaned back in her chair, her chest still tight with emotion. She stood up, left her bedroom, and headed for the kitchen to make herself a cup of milk.
She hadn’t even reached the kitchen when she heard Heather’s voice floating from the dining room.
“Ava, your chicken noodle soup is amazing.”
“If you like it, have some more.”
Heather looked up just then and spotted Felicia at the doorway. She froze, a piece of pork halfway to her mouth, not sure what to do next.
