Felicia pulled up in front of BlueMarble Investments and headed inside. As she walked through the lobby, Max appeared with Anne right beside him.

As soon as Anne spotted Felicia, she lit up and dashed over. “Evelynn!”

Felicia quickened her pace, meeting Anne halfway. The little girl wrapped her arms tight around Felicia’s legs, grinning up at her. Felicia reached down and ruffled Anne’s hair, her touch gentle and affectionate.

Only then did she look up and notice Max approaching. Her gaze cooled instantly, and Max caught the shift in her eyes. He handed her Anne’s backpack. Felicia took it wordlessly. Max said, “I’ll be away for about a week on business. On Monday, after you drop Anne at school, be sure to talk to her teacher and get everything sorted.”

He wanted her to handle Anne’s drop-offs and pick-ups through the first week, stay in touch with the teacher, and keep tabs on how Anne was adjusting.

“You should make sure the teacher knows what’s going on, too,” Felicia replied.

“I already called her.”

The conversation stalled. The air between them was icy, the lack of warmth obvious. Even someone passing by could feel it.

Felicia just nodded and looked down at Anne. The little girl was watching them both, her eyes big and curious. “Come on, Anne. Let’s go.”

Anne waved at her dad. “Bye, Daddy.”

Max crouched down so he was eye-level with her, his stern face softening. He took her hand and said, “Remember to call me, okay?”

Anne smiled. “I’ll call you every day.”

“Good.”

Amaris and Marian, the housekeepers, watched Felicia trail around the house with Anne glued to her side. No matter how much they disliked it or thought it was unfair, they kept their mouths shut.

Felicia rolled up her sleeves and made dinner for Anne herself. Anne wanted to help, and since she couldn’t sit still anyway, Felicia let her wash veggies at the sink.

After they finished dinner, Felicia took Anne upstairs. When they walked into Anne’s bedroom, the first thing Felicia noticed was a framed photo on the nightstand.

It was from their outing last week. Felicia was in costume, holding Anne in her arms. Both of them looked happy.

Anne pointed at the picture. “I asked Daddy to put it in a frame for me. That way, I can see you every day, Evelynn.”

Felicia’s heart softened, warmth spreading through her chest.
