Side by side, Felicia was pure elegance, the kind that comes with experience and confidence, like a glass of aged wine that leaves you wanting more. Andrea was beautiful, sure, but hers was a fresh, innocent kind of pretty. Sweet and easy to admire, but not something that would haunt your memories long after.
Felicia’s dress was long and dramatic, and Jeremy—ever the gentleman—bent down to help her with the hem as they walked. Andrea watched them, narrowing her eyes, catching bits of the conversations swirling around her.
“Miss Curtis might be pretty, but Felicia just outshines her. If I were a guy, I know who I’d pick.”
“She and Mr. Milman are such a perfect match. I bet a lot of girls will be jealous tonight.”
“Mr. Hawthorne’s with Miss Curtis, Mr. Milman’s taken... Looks like all the best men are officially off the market for the rest of us.”
“There’s always Luke. He’s not bad. Maybe we still have a shot.”
Jeremy was one of those men everyone in their social circle talked about. Handsome, but also distant, like he belonged somewhere above all this drama. Plenty of women wanted him, but he always seemed completely uninterested in love or romance. But now, seeing the way he cared for Felicia, how gentle he was, it was almost shocking. The man everyone thought was untouchable had finally fallen for a stunning lady.
Andrea tried to ignore the whispers, but every word felt like a needle. Her hand clenched tightly at her side, frustration simmering just below the surface.
“Andrea, let’s go.”
A deep voice pulled her back to reality. She took a breath, forcing her emotions back in check, and looked up at the man beside her. She managed a smile. “Okay.”
Felicia and Jeremy took their seats at the main table, right near the center where the host of the charity auction would sit. The host was chatting with Jeremy when he spotted Max coming over and immediately stood up to greet him.
“Mr. Hawthorne, so glad you could make it.”
Meanwhile, the host chatted quietly with Max, but Max’s eyes drifted to Felicia and Jeremy more than once before he looked away like nothing had happened.
Andrea set her sights on an antique vase and didn’t hesitate, winning it for fifty million. There was no question whose money was behind that bid.
Then, the emerald jewelry set came up, starting at twenty-five million. Felicia raised her paddle, calling out, “Twenty-five million.”
Andrea shot her a look and raised her own paddle. “Thirty million.”
Felicia turned, her eyes meeting Andrea’s, cold and challenging.
