There was a long pause.

“Where’s Anne?” Max asked.

Marian finally looked up at him, nerves clear in her eyes. “Miss Anne is in her room, alone. Felicia just went upstairs.”

Max gave them both a look, then turned and headed up the stairs. Only after he was completely out of sight did Marian and Amaris let out a breath of relief.

Felicia reached Anne’s bedroom and pushed the door open. Anne was lying on her stomach on the bed, legs swinging in the air as she flipped through a comic book. The moment she heard the door, Anne looked back. When she saw Felicia, she just stared, frozen in surprise.

Felicia walked over and sat down at the edge of the bed. Seeing Anne’s wide eyes and open mouth, she couldn’t help but smile. “What’s up, Anne?”

Anne blinked a few times, then suddenly rolled over and threw herself into Felicia’s arms. “You’re so pretty. You’re like an angel. No, you’re even prettier than an angel. And you smell really nice, too.”

She snuggled against Felicia, her voice full of playful affection.

Felicia gently patted her head. “Alright, alright.”

“Evelynn, can you hold me?”

Felicia stood and scooped Anne up, holding her close for a while. After a few minutes, she set Anne back down on the bed and started tickling her sides. Anne rolled around, giggling and shrieking with laughter.

They played like that for a bit until Felicia straightened up, taking a deep breath. “Okay, sweetheart, it’s bedtime.”

Just then, Anne suddenly sat up, eyes lighting up. “Daddy!”

Felicia froze for a second, then turned around. Max was standing in the doorway. She had no idea when he’d gotten there.

Anne jumped off the bed, running barefoot straight to him. “Daddy, Daddy!”

Max carried Anne back to the bed and set her down. For a moment, Anne looked back and forth between her dad and Evelynn, her little face glowing with happiness. If only they could both stay and tuck her in together.

“Goodnight, sweetheart.”

“Goodnight, Daddy.”

Max stood up, glancing at Felicia. “You’re staying with Anne tonight.”

Felicia looked at him, then lowered her eyes and just nodded softly, her voice quiet and unreadable.

Max watched her for a second, then turned and walked out, pulling the door shut behind him.

Once he was gone, Felicia helped Anne settle in. It was getting close to ten o’clock, and Anne was already sleepy. She mumbled a few words, then started to drift off, Felicia’s gentle humming lulling her the rest of the way to sleep.
