Anne perked up right away. “I’m not worried. I got everything ready last night.”
Felicia gave her a warm smile. “You’re amazing, Anne.”
Anne grinned, her little teeth shining. “I want to be the very best kid ever so you will like me even more.”
Felicia’s heart tightened at that. Anne was just so sweet and thoughtful. “Anne, even if you don’t do anything special, I’ll always like you the most.”
Anne beamed. “I like you the most too.”
“What’s your speech about today, Anne?” Max asked from across the table.
Anne turned to look at her dad.
The nanny brought over breakfast.
While munching on a dumpling, Anne suddenly remembered something. She looked at her dad and said, “Daddy, remember how I told you Aunt Andrea was mean to Evelynn? You have to help Evelynn.”
Felicia froze for a second.
She hadn’t expected Anne to actually tell Max about what happened at the Ross family’s house.
Max glanced at Felicia, who kept her head down and quietly finished her breakfast, not giving anything away. He said, “I will take care of it.”
Anne pressed on, “I don’t like Aunt Andrea anymore. She was mean to Evelynn. Can you not see her anymore, Daddy?”
Max’s voice stayed gentle. “I will look into it. Let’s eat now.”
Felicia felt a wave of relief. Anne standing up for her made it much harder for Andrea to get close in the future. As for Max brushing off Anne’s request, Felicia didn’t bother to care.
After breakfast, Max got ready to head to the office.
Felicia didn’t have a car today.
And with her family background, she’d probably take over the family business one day. She was the kind of child who seemed born for big things.
The teacher stood up straight and studied Felicia and Max. At first, she’d thought Evelynn was Anne’s mom, but Anne never called her mom, though sometimes the resemblance between them was hard to miss.
Standing next to Mr. Hawthorne, who was so handsome and distinguished, Evelynn looked like she belonged there. Her calm, mature vibe actually matched him better than Miss Curtis’ did.
It was obvious to the teacher that Anne liked Evelynn best.
But Mr. Hawthorne and Miss Curtis were supposed to be a couple, so who exactly was Evelynn to him? The whole situation seemed complicated. But with wealthy families like theirs, tangled relationships were nothing new. It wasn’t something the teachers could talk about anyway.
She turned to Felicia and Max. “Anne has her speech this morning. If you have time, you’re very welcome to watch.”
Anne brightened immediately. “Yay!” She grabbed Felicia’s hand. “Evelynn, will you stay and listen to my speech? I’ll do such a good job, I promise.”
She didn’t even bother asking her dad. She knew he would stay for her.
