Luke watched Felicia walk away, the unease in his chest refusing to settle. He pulled out his phone and called Anthony, deciding he’d only feel at ease if he stuck close by. Anthony gave him the code and told him to just come in whenever he wanted.
At the villa, Marian and Amaris were both startled when Felicia came in. It wasn’t her usual time. The look on her face, the energy she carried, made both women feel strangely guilty. Neither dared to get too close.
Felicia dropped her bag on the table and sat down on the sofa. She pulled out her phone and called Max.
He picked up almost instantly.
“What’s going on?”
“I need you to send Anne to your mom’s today. There’s something I want to talk about.”
Max sounded calm, like he already knew what was coming. “Alright.”
She hung up and tossed her phone onto the sofa. Then she stood, walked to the elevator, and went down to the wine cellar. She grabbed two bottles of red wine, the kind people usually just look at but never drink.
Around four, her phone rang again. It was Anne.
“Evelynn, I’m going to Grandma’s house today,” Anne said, her voice bright.
Felicia took a second to collect herself, making sure her tone sounded normal. “Okay, sweetheart. Remember to do your homework.”
“I will! Our teacher praised my work and Yara’ today. We both got gold stars.”
Felicia smiled. “That’s because you’re amazing, Anne.”
Anne giggled, soaking up the praise. They chatted for a few minutes, then said goodbye.
The house was quiet until six, when Felicia heard a car outside.
Marian and Amaris had been waiting by the door, fidgeting. When Max stepped out of the car, they rushed to greet him.
“Sir.”
Felicia laughed, a bitter edge to the sound. She stared straight at him. “You might not hate me, but I hate you right now.”
Max’s face didn’t change. “That’s your choice.”
Felicia looked at him, sitting there like he was untouchable, like nothing she felt mattered to him. It was exactly the same as five years ago.
“So you’re just going to drag this out forever?”
“People have to live with the choices they make,” Max replied.
Felicia’s fingers curled tight, her voice trembling with anger. “You’re the one who wanted the divorce.”
Max’s tone stayed low and steady. “I can change any decision I make. But you, Felicia, you can’t.”
Felicia clenched her fists, her frustration boiling over. “Why not?”
