Felicia’s heart skipped a beat the moment she heard it. Something inside her cracked open, all those feelings she’d kept buried rushing up so fast it made her head spin.

The man sitting nearby just watched, his face calm and unreadable, as if nothing in the world could faze him.

It took Felicia a while to collect herself. “Anne, why did you call me that?”

Anne looked up with bright eyes. “The nurse said you’re my mommy.”

“Are you hurting, Mommy? Let me blow on it for you.” Anne switched so easily, calling her Mommy like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Felicia’s mind went blank. For a second, she didn’t know how to respond or if she even should. But finally, she forced herself to speak, even though every word hurt. She gently corrected Anne.

Anne’s face fell and her shoulders drooped. “Okay, then.”

Felicia felt a sting in her chest, sharp and sudden, almost like a needle prick. When she looked up, she accidentally locked eyes with him. His dark gaze made her breath catch, a rush of guilt hitting her as if she’d done something terrible. He only looked at her for a moment before glancing away.

The IV finished up, and a nurse came in to remove the line from Felicia’s hand.

The doctor gave a few last instructions. “You need to rest for the next couple of days. I’ve written a prescription to help you recover.”

“But most importantly, get some rest. Don’t stress too much, take care of yourself. Medicine can’t fix everything.”

Felicia nodded. “I understand. Thank you.”

She’d been through pain before, but nothing like this. The last two times had been so bad she’d needed IVs at the hospital just to cope. Each episode seemed to hit harder than the last. This time, she knew it was because Max had pushed her too far.

Anne piped up, “Thank you, Doctor.” The doctor smiled and gave Anne’s cheek a gentle pat.

“All set. Go pay and pick up your prescription.”

After the doctor left, Felicia reached for her phone to pay fort7 the bill. Before she could do anything, Anne grabbed the bill, marched straight to her dad, and handed it over. “Daddy, you pay.”

“Anne,” Felicia called, “give that back to me.”

“He’s at the office. I just got home.”

“We’ll talk when I get back.”

“Want me to come pick you up?”

“It’s okay. I’ll manage.”

Tommy was already waiting in the parking lot. Once Anne was dropped off, Felicia would take his car home. She only needed to work from home today anyway.

The driver returned with the medicine, and they headed out for the school. When they arrived, a teacher was waiting at the gate.

“Bye, Daddy. Bye, Evelynn,” Anne called as she ran inside.

As soon as Anne disappeared through the doors, Felicia turned away without saying a word to Max and walked straight to Tommy’s car.
