Max didn’t say another word. He walked straight out, got in his car, and drove off.

Luke stood alone in the yard, looking pale. His heart just kept sinking lower.

That night, Anne stayed over at the Ross house.

Once Anne was asleep, Felicia quietly went downstairs. Colton and Ava were sitting in the living room, waiting for her.

Colton spoke first. “Anne called you Mom. Did you tell her the truth?”

Felicia gave a simple explanation.

Colton and Ava could only sigh. Watching their daughter suffer and not being able to help was heartbreaking. If it hadn’t been for the Ross family’s troubles back then, Felicia wouldn’t be in this mess now.

Colton’s eyes filled with tears. “Felicia, this is all my fault. I’m so sorry.”

Felicia shook her head. “Dad, none of this is on you. I’ve never regretted having Anne. I deserve everything that happened to me.”

The room fell quiet for a moment.

Ava finally asked, “How did the hearing go today?”

Felicia replied, “The court hasn’t made a decision yet, but they definitely won’t grant the divorce.”

Two days later, Jeremy came back to the Capital.

That evening, Felicia dropped by his office to hand over some documents. Once they finished talking about work, Jeremy glanced at her and joked, “You don’t look so great lately. Want me to give you a few days off?”

Felicia tried to smile. The truth was, even though she’d accepted how things would probably turn out, the thought still made her restless. “If I take time off, Savannah will end up buried in work instead.”

Felicia knew why. Anne wanted to go home, to be with both her and Max, but Felicia had told her she couldn’t. That had left Anne heartbroken.

When Felicia dropped Anne at school that morning, her eyes were still red from crying.
