Anne nodded quietly.

Max straightened up, gave Felicia a quick, unreadable look, and left the villa without saying a word.

Felicia stayed with Anne the whole afternoon.

As dinner approached, Felicia headed to the kitchen and started cooking for Anne herself.

She called Jeremy. “Jeremy, I’m really sorry, but I can’t make it to the concert tonight.”

Jeremy didn’t sound surprised at all. “Savannah mentioned Anne’s not feeling well.”

Felicia let out a soft “mm.”

“How’s Anne doing now?”

“She’s fine.”

“That’s good. We can always go to another concert. Just take care of Anne.”

“Thanks, I will.”

While Felicia cooked, Anne followed close behind, her own little helper.

That night, Felicia stayed over with Anne.

Around eight, Max came home.

Felicia was sitting on the living room sofa with Anne, watching cartoons.

“Daddy.”

Max scooped Anne up, and the two of them cuddled for a bit.

Felicia turned to Anne. “Let Daddy keep you company, okay? I still have some work to finish.”

“Okay,” Anne said.

Felicia didn’t look at Max again. She headed upstairs to Anne’s room.

Earlier that afternoon, around four, she’d had Mason bring over her laptop and the files she needed to finish.

Her phone started buzzing again. She glanced at the screen and picked up. “Hey, Gavin.”

Max had already started getting involved with Northstar Dynamics, so it was time for her to step back.

But she couldn’t let Max find out, or it would get way too complicated. The only person she could trust with this was Gavin.

Gavin caught on fast. He’d guessed what Max was up to back when he bought Horizon Peak Energy.

“Since you’re the one asking, Evelynn, I’ll help.”

“Thank you. I’ll make sure you get something in return.”

Gavin chuckled. “Forget a reward. I’d rather you owe me a favor.”

“Fine. I owe you one.”

“Deal.”

Felicia had just ended the call when Max walked in, carrying a sleeping Anne.

He glanced her way, then gently laid Anne down on the bed.
