Max stepped out of the hospital room and took the elevator down. As he walked out into the corridor, he caught a snippet of conversation from two girls waiting to get in.
“He’s insanely hot, and his girlfriend is so pretty. Total eye candy together.”
“Seriously, I could never even dream of having a boyfriend that good-looking and sweet.”
The two were lost in their own world until a shift in the air made them look up. Max strode past, radiating a quiet intensity that seemed to chill the space around him. They watched him go, mouths slightly open, completely distracted by his presence.
Max kept moving, heading into the lobby. That’s when he saw Felicia and Jeremy coming in. Felicia was nibbling on a stick of candied apple. Jeremy carried a bag packed with snacks for her. She’d just bitten into the first piece and grimaced, probably because it was way too tart. Clearly, she had no interest in eating more.
Jeremy offered to try one. Felicia held the skewer out, expecting he’d take one with his hand, but instead, he leaned in, closed the distance between them, and bit off a piece right from the stick. For a second, their faces were just inches apart. Felicia caught a whiff of his subtle cologne and froze, caught off guard.
Jeremy didn’t seem to notice. He chewed thoughtfully, a smile warming his eyes. “It’s not that sour,” he told her. “If you don’t want any more, I’ll finish it. No point letting it go to waste.”
Felicia snapped out of her daze and smiled back. “Better not. Your stomach’s still recovering. One piece is enough for you.”
Jeremy shrugged, not pushing it. “Fair enough.”
Max turned, meeting Jeremy’s gaze. The tension between them was electric. People passing by could sense it and instinctively steered clear. The three of them made a striking scene, but the heavy, uncomfortable vibe was impossible to ignore.
Max’s voice was low and cold. “You’re not getting any younger. Maybe it’s time to focus on your own future. Here’s some advice. Don’t pour your energy into someone who isn’t worth it.”
His eyes lingered on Felicia, her face tight with anger. She glared back, furious enough to want to grab the snack bag from Jeremy’s hand and throw it right at Max.
Jeremy’s tone stayed cool and even. “Thanks for the advice. But maybe you should spend less time worrying about me, and more time figuring out if you’re poking your nose where it doesn’t belong.”
