Only the Hawthorne and Gilbert families knew the truth about Max’s marriage, and whether Anne was born inside or outside of it. Since they kept everything under wraps, no one else dared to ask too much.
Max glanced at Cian, a faint smile playing on his lips. “Jealous?”
Cian broke into a grin. “Honestly, who wouldn’t be? But really, how did you end up with a daughter as sweet as Anne? I’ll never figure it out.”
Everyone knew Max was cold. He never really showed his true feelings to anyone.
Wyatt watched Felicia as she led Anne away, then said, “It’s obvious. Anne must take after her mom—gentle, kind. If she was anything like Max, we’d all be in trouble.”
Cian’s eyes sparkled with curiosity. “So, Wyatt, who is Anne’s mother, really?”
It was pretty clear Max didn’t love Anne’s mother. If he did, she wouldn’t have stayed a secret all these years. She had never even been seen at any family events.
But even if he didn’t care for the mother, Max absolutely adored Anne. If he ever cared about someone, it was her.
Wyatt looked at Max. “If you really want to know, just ask him.”
Cian let out a laugh, letting the subject drop. “Fine, fine. But be honest, Max—did you want a daughter because you were jealous of Wyatt’s little girl?”
Max’s eyes softened as he watched Anne from a distance. Felicia tucked a flower behind Anne’s ear, and the girl’s smile was brighter than sunshine.
Max turned to Cian, warmth in his eyes. “If you’re that jealous, you should hurry up and have your own.”
As they chatted, Felicia’s kindness and easy confidence won everyone over. They all exchanged numbers, promising to invite her out next time. Felicia accepted their invitations with a smile.
Meanwhile, Cian and Max were upstairs playing cards. In the middle of the game, Max’s phone rang, so he stepped out onto the balcony to take the call. From there, he could see the women in the garden, laughing and keeping an eye on the kids.
His gaze landed on Felicia. She was laughing at something someone said, her smile bright and unrestrained. She wore a simple blue dress, a long cardigan, her hair swept up, with only a touch of makeup and classic pearl earrings. Surrounded by ladies in high fashion and sparkling jewelry, Felicia wasn’t the flashiest, but she was easily the most striking. She was the kind of girl you noticed right away.
After his call, Max turned around to head back inside. Wyatt was waiting there, following his gaze toward the garden.
“Evelynn’s really popular today,” Wyatt said with a laugh. “Someone just asked me about her again.” He shot Max a knowing look.
