Felicia squeezed Anne’s tiny hand. “I don’t know how to dance.”

Anne’s shoulders slumped and she looked a little crushed.

Just then, Max walked over and locked eyes with Felicia. “If you don’t know how, I can show you.”

Felicia hesitated, glancing up at him in surprise.

Anne’s mood flipped in a heartbeat. “Really? Evelynn, Daddy can teach you! Let’s go!”

She grabbed Felicia’s hands and tugged her back toward the dance floor.

“Anne!”

“Come on, Evelynn, let’s go!”

Felicia didn’t say anything, letting Anne pull her along.

When they reached the edge of the dance floor, Max reached out and took Felicia’s hand. She flinched, trying to pull away, but he just held on tighter.

Felicia shot him a sharp look.

He simply said, “Come with me.”

Max led her onto the dance floor. Anne stood nearby, clapping and beaming with excitement.

Max took Felicia’s hand in his and placed his other hand at her waist. “Max, you—”

“If you keep struggling, everyone’s going to stare at you,” he said quietly, his voice deep and steady.

Felicia dropped her eyes, forcing down the emotions swirling inside her. She refused to look at him again.

“Do you really need me to teach you?”

Her movements were awkward and stiff, not at all in time with his. But with so many people watching, she didn’t want to make a scene.

As he felt her steps start to relax, his grip loosened a little. Out of nowhere, he asked, “What were you talking about with Cian?”

Felicia’s tone was flat, edged with annoyance. “That’s none of your business.”

“Thinking of getting yourself a boyfriend?” he pressed.

Felicia could feel anger burning in her chest, threatening to spill over.

Off the dance floor, Cian watched the two of them. The bright outdoor lights made it hard to see their faces, but it was obvious they were talking the whole time. He had noticed how resistant Felicia was when Max first led her out.

Cian had wanted to ask Evelynn to dance himself, but she got a phone call and then Max swooped in before he had the chance.

He turned to Kennedy, who was standing beside him. “Kennedy, how do Max and Evelynn know each other?”

Kennedy was still in shock from seeing Max take Evelynn’s hand and lead her onto the dance floor. He had watched Max approach her, which was the opposite of how he’d treated her before.

Had something changed between Max and Evelynn?

Kennedy snapped out of it and looked at Cian.

“What are you thinking about?”

“Nothing,” Kennedy said. “What did you just ask, Cian?”
