On her way home, Felicia got a call from Jeremy. Even during the holidays, neither of them could really take a break. Work just kept piling up.

Jeremy had only just finished his own tasks when he heard what had happened online that afternoon. Felicia had been in the dark until now.

Max had acted fast. It was impressive, really. In just a few hours, he had wiped every trace of himself from the internet. Felicia could only wonder who had wanted to make the whole mess public in the first place.

“Max didn’t give you any trouble, did he?” Jeremy sounded genuinely concerned.

Felicia was calm now. “No, he didn’t.”

“That’s good. But Felicia, why did you go and do something like that?”

She paused, taking a steadying breath. “I’ve been holding in so much for so long. If I don’t let it out, I’m just hurting myself.”

She kept her answer vague. She had to. The last thing she wanted was for Colt’s side to get dragged into her problems.

They chatted for a few more minutes, then said goodbye.

Even with the break, Felicia still had work to finish up. No rest for the busy.

Ava had already packed up Felicia’s suitcase. She looked worried, which made Felicia walk over and pull her into a hug. “Mom, I’m coming back. Don’t worry so much.”

Felicia was leaving partly for work, but if she was honest, she needed to get away from Max for a while. She’d decided it was best to put some distance between them, to stop herself from getting stuck in a mess she couldn’t escape. She promised herself she would come home again.

Ava squeezed her shoulder. “But what about Anne? She’s so attached to you now. If you leave suddenly, she’s going to be really upset.”

Just hearing Anne’s name made Felicia’s eyes sting. Even in front of her mom, she couldn’t keep her emotions in check. She sat down on the edge of the bed, wiping at her eyes. “I just don’t have a choice right now.”

She really didn’t know what else to do. Anne just wanted a mother, and Felicia knew it. Walking away now was tearing her apart. But she couldn’t stay married to Max, not like this.

Ava understood her. She was a mother too. Felicia couldn’t get a divorce, so she couldn’t admit to being Anne’s mom. And Max just didn’t seem to understand how much pain he was causing.

Colton gave her a tired smile. “Don’t worry. I’ll sort it out.”

Felicia let it go.

She drove them all to the restaurant. Tonight wasn’t just about their little family. Ava’s parents and other family members were coming too. It was a big family dinner.

The restaurant was packed, full of families celebrating together.

They got to their private room early. Greg was still at work. He hadn’t really had a day off since the company started having problems, and he was still on his way. Some of Ava’s family weren’t there yet either.

Colton and Ava waited outside. Felicia stayed in the room, keeping an eye on Sean.

Just then, a Bentley pulled into the parking lot. Darin got out, heading toward the restaurant. He noticed Ava and Colton standing at the entrance and paused, watching them for a moment.
