Once they were out of sight, Heather nudged Jeremy with her shoulder and said quietly, “Hey, you really should pack up and find a reason to tag along. Trey’s still over there, and so is Holden. Sure, he’s in prison now, but you never know. Maybe he’ll get out early.”

Trey and Holden were twins. Holden had tried to assault Felicia once, and he’d been sent to prison for attempted rape. He got five years, and it had already been two.

Felicia and Luke arrived in New York and settled into a rented villa. They’d be staying there for a while. Felicia took a couple of days to adjust to the time zone, catching up on rest. After that, she headed into the office to get back to work.

Everything at the company had been running smoothly during her absence. As for the Horizon Peak Energy investment, someone had come by to talk about it before, but nothing had happened since. Felicia could pretty much guess why. She’d called off the divorce, so Max had no reason to target her business anymore. If she wanted to fight Max in court, it definitely wouldn’t be as straightforward as Heather’s divorce from Trey. Max was a different kind of ruthless.

Felicia spent her days reviewing projects and financial reports. The numbers looked solid, profits steadily growing. After a few days, she realized that being away from all the drama and difficult people back home made her work more efficiently. Whenever she had some downtime, she’d video chat with Anne.

Anne was living with Tatiana now, and Tatiana noticed something new. Anne seemed to rely on Felicia more than on Max. Back when Max traveled for work, Anne used to insist on talking to him every day. Now, the first person Anne wanted to call was Felicia. There were even a couple of times when Anne had been on a video call with Max, but as soon as Felicia called, Anne hung up on her dad to talk to Felicia instead.

Tatiana started to wonder what would happen if Max ever wanted to remarry. There was no way he could have just one child. One day, she mentioned it to Max, hoping he’d finally cut ties with Felicia for good. But Max just gave his usual answer. “Mom, don’t worry about my business. Just take care of Anne.”

Felicia met his eyes. “There’s nothing left for us to say. Next time we run into each other, you don’t need to say hello.”

She moved to walk past him. Trey called out, “How’s Heather doing?”

Felicia paused just for a moment. “Heather and Yara are both doing great,” she replied, her voice calm. Then she kept walking, not looking back.
