Felicia walked straight into the meeting room.
As she opened the door, she spotted a man standing at the floor-to-ceiling window, phone pressed to his ear. Even from across the room, his presence was almost overwhelming, like the air shifted around him.
“Evelynn, here you are,” the manager called out with a quick greeting.
Felicia’s gaze locked on Max.
He glanced over his shoulder, gave her a brief look, then turned back to his call. A few more words and he hung up, slipping into a chair like he owned the place.
Felicia gathered herself and stepped forward. “Mr. Hawthorne, what brings you in today?”
Max leaned back, looking casual, but his eyes were sharp and confident. “I’m here to check on Northstar Dynamics’ current operations. I’ll need all your financial data from the past two years.”
Felicia held his gaze, searching his face for hints of what he was really after.
When she didn’t move, Max’s eyes darkened a shade. “Evelynn.”
Felicia turned to the manager. “Please get those reports ready.”
The manager nodded and hurried out.
Felicia took the chair across from Max, set her bag down, and pulled out her phone to text Gavin.
Max’s sudden visit threw her schedule off and she had no idea how long he planned to stay. She was supposed to meet Gavin at one, and now she might not make it.
Just in case, she texted Gavin to see if they could push their meeting to tomorrow.
Gavin replied almost instantly. [No problem.]
Felicia felt a small wave of relief.
Across the table, Max watched her with a cold, narrowed gaze. “Is this what you call professionalism?”
His question hung in the air.
Felicia glanced up, her eyes cool and unfazed. Without answering, she stood, ignoring his tone completely. “Mr. Hawthorne, you showed up without warning. These reports take time. Please be patient. I’ll get ready as well.”
Lina, Northstar Dynamics’ COO, walked in behind her. She was sharp and always attentive.
“Evelynn, Mr. Hawthorne is the executive director who took over Horizon Peak Energy,” Lina whispered, almost worried.
“I know,” Felicia replied, calm and steady.
Lina frowned, concern written all over her face. “Are you sure it’s okay to just leave him waiting like that?”
“Lina, go focus on your tasks. Don’t worry about them,” Felicia said, her tone gentle but firm.
Lina hesitated, still uneasy.
Felicia softened. “Just make sure the project data is ready as soon as possible and get it to Mr. Hawthorne.”
Lina nodded quickly. “Okay.”
She left, shutting the door behind her.
