“I understand, Grandma.”
That night, Felicia was surprised when Max, the same man who had asked for a divorce that morning, actually came home.-
“Max…”
“Make me some coffee and bring it to the study.”
He didn’t wait for her answer and went straight upstairs. Felicia stood there for a moment, then shook herself out of it and headed to the kitchen. She brewed a cup of coffee and brought it to him. Max was flipping through some documents, face sharp and cold, a wall of distance around him that made the room feel even chillier.
Felicia didn’t say a word. She just set the coffee down and quietly left.
Even after he came back, they kept their distance. Max slept in the master bedroom upstairs. Felicia stayed downstairs in the guest room.
The next morning, since Max was home, the housekeeper had gone all out with breakfast. Max sat at the head of the table, but Felicia was nowhere in sight.
Usually, when he was home, Felicia would have already ironed his clothes for the day and made him breakfast herself. She was always the picture of a dutiful wife. But this morning, there were no freshly pressed shirts, and the breakfast was clearly made by the staff.
“Where is she?” Max asked, already sounding annoyed.
The housekeeper Marian didn’t hesitate to complain. “I went to wake her up, but she just stayed in bed. Every day, we have to bring her food to her room, and she barely says a word to us. We ask what she wants, she doesn’t answer. We’re not mind readers. When Mrs. Hawthorne was expecting you, sir, she still took care of everything. But with her, it’s like she’s here to just enjoy herself.”
Max frowned. “Go get her up.”
“Yes, sir.”
Felicia had actually been awake for a while. She was just waiting for Max to leave before coming out.
Suddenly, Marian barged in without knocking. She saw Felicia sitting on the sofa and couldn’t help but sneer. “Well, aren’t you the lady of the house, just waiting for someone to come invite you to breakfast?”
Felicia looked up, her voice cold. “If I’m not, are you?”
For months, Felicia had played the quiet, obedient wife. Marian clearly hadn’t expected any pushback.
Max’s frown deepened. Felicia knew what that meant. He was the kind of person who hated being challenged, at work or at home.
“I wasn’t asking for your opinion. I was reminding you of your place.”
Felicia lowered her head and stayed quiet.
Max stared at her, his expression growing darker as he watched how lifeless she looked. Then he told Marian and the others that from now on, Felicia was to handle her own affairs. They didn’t need to wait on her.
Felicia’s hand tightened around her spoon.
After breakfast, Max left.
Felicia went to Autumnridge University. When she arrived at Jeremy’s office, she saw him sitting behind his desk, dressed sharp in a suit and rimless glasses perched on his nose. He looked mature and composed, even though he was only twenty-nine. He's the youngest professor in Autumnridge’s finance department and a prodigy in the financial world.
Felicia lifted her hand and knocked on his door.

Is this coming to an end...
Oh nooo!! Don’t tell me Max will get washed ashore on a remote island then loses all his memory, then falls inlove with the local girl who saves him. Then when he meets Felicia again he won’t recognize her and breaks her heart again. Additional plot twist is that Felicia is pregnant with their 2nd child. Please pleaseee don’t give us this scenario.. LOL!!!...
If Max can be forgiven Darrin can be forgiven. And I do not like this marriage business but if it has to happen I hope after he gets stranded on some remote island alone while Felicia and his family fight over custody she wins and also gets half his estate. Then by time he comes back she's found having and remarried. Lol...
The writer is good. They're making me interested in Max. I won't say like yet....
It seems the only one who hasn't suffered is Max. Even his family fakes anger and disappointment all their own doing so they suffer a little. Everyone else has suffered. Luke and Jeremy unrequited. Felicia has suffered the most from family to unrequited to romance to long suffering Mother. Even baby Anne never had a mother til Felicia suffered then came back only to suffer some more. lol...
Oh no what did Colton do?... I have a bone to pick. When Olisha had to go the hospital why beg for Felicia? When she so loved Max? Seemed like she was in on the setup for Felicia to see a suicide for the 2nd time orchestrated by holden and his brother again. I might drop this series it's becoming endless with no real satisfaction for me. I don't need it to end because it's like a soap opera but if things don't end up making sense, tying up loose storylines it's gonna get old fast for me. Good luck author....
Anne, I think your baby brother is on the way. Thank goodness it doesn't say that Felicia is crying just like the last time but still, there's no willingness on her part. Max! You need to try harder. Make her fall in love with you again....
The writer did a big one with Jeremy's speech to Max. He said almost everything that needed to be said. I have wanted Felicia or someone who knows the past to just tell that whole stinking family what they did and how disgusting they are and what they're doing now how unfair it all is to Felicia. A pity it was only Max but he really needed to hear this (plus more)....
I love the chase of this novel, how you’ve build each of the characters. They almost seem like real. I feel like I know them irl. But however I would like to know what’s max’s pov and what’s going on in his head. I truly believe max’s just a grey character. And also please please please update more!!!...
I was really hoping that Max and Felicia would end up together, but why did Max do that to Felicia? 😭 Is that his way of making Felicia overcome the trauma Holden caused her? I don't think that's helping at all. I just hope Max's character has some redeeming qualities in the coming chapters....
