Felicia wore a crisp white coat, her long hair falling softly around her shoulders and swaying gently in the breeze. A pearl headband kept her hair in place, and her delicate face was so striking that even the flowers she carried seemed dull in comparison. She stood there quietly, her gentle presence impossible to ignore.
Max couldn’t take his eyes off her. Darin, standing nearby, looked like he wanted to say something, but before he could, Max was already striding toward Felicia. He stopped right in front of her and reached for her hand.
Felicia blinked in surprise. “What are you...”
Without a word, Max pulled a purple bracelet from his pocket and slipped it onto her wrist. The stone was smooth and flawless, almost glowing even in the cloudy light. It looked expensive, the kind of gift you’d never expect out of the blue.
For a second, Felicia just stared at the bracelet, caught up in the shimmer of violet. Then Max’s voice brought her back.
“Do you like it?”
She pulled her hand back and looked up at him, her voice calm. “You really didn’t have to do this. Even if you just told Anne you gave me a gift, I wouldn’t out you.”
Max’s brow tightened, barely noticeable. “How do I know you won’t tell Anne anyway?”
What was that supposed to mean? Did he really think she’d try to start drama between him and Anne?
Felicia dropped her gaze, not bothering to answer. She hugged the bouquet closer, saying nothing, and for a moment, the air between them felt heavy.
When it was clear he wasn’t planning to leave, Felicia finally looked up, a little confused. “Are you not leaving?”
Just then, a voice called out, “Felicia.”
She turned and spotted Jeremy coming out of the arrivals hall. She didn’t look back at Max, completely missing the way his face darkened. Instead, she walked over to Jeremy with a gentle smile and handed him the flowers.
“Congratulations, Jeremy.”
He took the bouquet with both hands, smiling. “Thank you.”
Darin just grinned. “Alright, maybe I got it wrong. You give her an expensive bracelet, and she won’t even give you a single flower.”
Max didn’t reply.
Darin shrugged and let it go.
Meanwhile, in the other car, Jeremy filled Felicia in on everything. Max had never actually planned to work with Holden. He’d set the guy up, and in the end, only Holden ended up losing big. For the next year or two, Holden wouldn’t be causing trouble for anyone.
“Figures. Max really isn’t someone worth trusting,” Felicia said. Both he and Holden would do anything for their own gain, but this time, Holden just couldn’t outsmart Max.
“Oh, by the way, Jeremy, how’s your injury?” Felicia asked, suddenly remembering.
“I’m fine now, really. No need to worry,” Jeremy assured her.
