Max paused, eyes dropping to the floor before he spoke in a quiet voice. “It’s nothing, just making conversation.”
Felicia gave him a puzzled look. She didn’t bother trying to figure him out. She used to miss her brother. Back then, she’d think about how happy the four of them used to be, and sometimes she’d cry herself to sleep.
But that was a long time ago. Now she had Greg. She had a mom who truly cared, and a sweet little brother. With her new family, even the deepest longing had faded away, little by little.
Still, it made her wonder how he and her mother were doing. Her brother had probably started his own family by now. She didn’t know if they’d ever cross paths again. And even if they did, they’d probably feel more like strangers than siblings. Maybe it was best to let all those old memories stay where they belonged, tucked away in the past, without stirring up each other’s lives.
Max was watching her, paying close attention to the way her expression changed.
After a while, he spoke up. “Unblock me. I’ll send you the photos.”
Felicia shot him another look, then grabbed her phone and took Max off her block list. He sent the photos right away. They were all sunrise shots and a few with her and Anne.
“Want the group photo too?” Max asked.
“No, that’s okay,” Felicia said.
He didn’t push it.
She saved the photos, glancing at his profile picture. He was still using one of Anne. For a second, she thought about blocking him again, but honestly, what was the point?
Bored, she scrolled through her feed—and nearly did a double take. Max had posted something. She stared, making sure she wasn’t seeing things. He’d put up a nine-photo grid. The center was three little snowmen. Most of them were shots of Anne or the scenery, but one was the three of them together.
Max looked right at her. “If it doesn’t matter, why are you so worked up? Or is there something you still care about?”
Felicia frowned, annoyed. “The only one I care about is Anne.”
Max’s voice was steady. “If Anne really means that much to you, I hope you always put her first.”
Felicia met his gaze. “And I hope I never have to get tangled up with you over her.”
Max just gave her a slight, almost mocking smile, then looked away and didn’t say another word.
Felicia stared at his post on her phone. It was obvious he wasn’t going to take it down. A new notification popped up. Cian had liked and commented: Whoa, look at that. You actually posted something. What’s going on?
