Felicia listened quietly, nodding whenever the matriarch spoke. If this were before, before she’d seen Max and Andrea together, maybe she would have kept hoping. Maybe she would have tried to fight for her marriage, for their child’s sake. But now, everything was crystal clear. Her marriage with Max was as good as over. There was nothing left for them.

The only reason Miranda was treating her a little better these days was because of the baby. Even so, her words made it obvious she still expected Felicia to be a proper wife, the kind who put her husband first and never embarrassed him in public.

Felicia couldn’t help but wonder why Miranda had suddenly decided to go with her to the check-up. Did she already know Felicia had moved out of Oakridge Estate? Were there rumors swirling around about Max? Their marriage was never officially announced, but everyone in their social circle knew about it. Even if Felicia wasn’t considered a good match for Max, the fact was they were married, and she was pregnant. If people started talking about Max seeing another woman, it would definitely hurt his reputation.

When the car pulled up at Oakridge Estate, Felicia followed Miranda inside. She was surprised to find Max at home. He wasn’t off with Andrea today. Instead, he was lounging on the sofa in light clothes, reading a book. When Miranda came in with Felicia, Max glanced up, his face as unreadable as ever. Miranda walked over and handed him the paperwork from the check-up.

“You should look this over,” she said.

Felicia sat across from them, feeling tense as she watched the exchange. Max kept his eyes on the papers, his gaze cool and distant. He set the book down and said, “Lunch is ready. Let’s eat first.”

Felicia’s heart clenched. That was exactly the reaction she’d expected. Miranda shot him a look but let it go. “Alright. Later, then.”

They moved to the dining room. Marian and Amaris were already there, setting out lunch. Both of them looked uneasy under Miranda’s sharp gaze. Then Miranda spoke up.

“Taking care of Felicia is your job. I don’t want to hear any more rumors. If anything happens to the child she’s carrying, I’ll hold you both responsible.”

Felicia hadn’t realized how close the Gilbert and Hawthorne families were until she married into the Hawthornes.

“Nate isn’t happy with you right now. You should probably keep a low profile,” Miranda said.

The Gilbert family had a reputation for strict rules and old-fashioned values. They’d been old money for over a century. Nate cared most about integrity and family harmony. None of the Gilbert children had ever caused a scandal.

Felicia stood there, listening. She’d guessed right. Ugly rumors really were starting to spread, and that’s why Miranda had personally made sure to bring her back.
