When Darin looked away, his eyes landed on a Bentley parked across the street.
Colton spoke up, his tone casual. “By the way, your mom told me you two had a big fight. No matter what happens, she's still your mother. There's no such thing as a grudge that lasts forever between a parent and child.”
Darin couldn't help but laugh to himself, a soundless, bitter sort of amusement.
Just then, his phone started buzzing. He pulled it out and nodded at Colton. “Dad, let me grab this call.”
“Go ahead,” Colton replied.
Darin answered, “Hello?”
On the other end, Max sounded impatient. “When are you getting here?”
“Something came up, so it'll be a while,” Darin said.
Max just made a noise of acknowledgment.
Colton caught a bit of the voice through the phone. It seemed familiar, but since it was only a short exchange, he didn't dwell on it.
Once Darin hung up, Colton glanced over. “Work stuff?”
“Nothing urgent,” Darin said.
“Then let's eat first. My treat tonight.”
Darin just nodded. “Sounds good.”
They waved the waiter over and placed their orders.
Dinner passed quietly, a comfortable routine between them. When they finished, Darin offered to drive Colton home.
Colton shook his head. “I've got a driver waiting. Don't worry about me. Come over for dinner sometime, alright?” He patted Darin’s shoulder, lingering a little.
Darin smiled. “I will.”
Colton hesitated, then added, “Don't push yourself too hard at work. Take care of your health.”
“I will, Dad. Promise.”
Max gave a small shrug. “But without your mom, you wouldn’t even be here.”
Darin laughed quietly. “My dad's right. It’s just fate, I guess.” He tipped his glass back and finished his drink in one go.
Max watched him for a moment, then asked, “So what does your mom want from you?”
“Jeremy tracked down the Curtis family. He’s demanding answers about what happened to your wife. He’s not messing around this time. He really cares about her. If she hadn’t married you, maybe she would’ve been happy with him.”
Max’s eyes narrowed. He set his glass down, his voice a little rough from the alcohol. “There’s no such thing as what ifs. She doesn’t love him.”
Darin looked at him, almost amused. “But she’s divorcing you. That says she doesn’t love you either.”
“Feelings can always change,” Max replied calmly.
“You’re so confident,” Darin teased. “Aren’t you scared you’ll lose everything one day?”
Max’s eyes glinted in the low light, impossible to read. “When that day comes, I’ll deal with it.”
