Ever since that close call last time, Felicia hadn’t come home. Nothing bad had actually happened, but just thinking about it still made Ava’s heart race.

Felicia grinned at her. “Mom, you talk like I’ve been gone for years.”

“Felicia’s home?” Colton called from the living room.

“Hey, Dad.”

“You’ve really been working hard lately,” he said, concern in his voice.

Felicia shrugged. “It’s the end of the year. It’s normal to be busy.”

Ava reached out, holding Felicia’s hand. “You don’t have to work yourself to the bone, sweetheart. Maybe cut back a little. It hurts us to see you pushing so hard.”

Felicia smiled. “What about Greg? He’s just as busy. When’s the last time he actually took a break?”

Ava sighed. “He’s a man, Felicia. Now’s the time for him to build his career. He needs to work hard if he ever wants to get married.”

Felicia couldn’t help but chuckle. There was something about being home that made everything feel lighter. She went over to tease Sean, playing with him for a while, deciding she’d stay in for the day.

That evening, Greg came home. The whole family had dinner together. Outside, the wind was biting cold, but the house was warm, filled with laughter and little stories from their day. In just a week, it would be New Year’s. Another year, gone in a blink.

After dinner, Felicia caught up with Greg in his study.

“Still working?” she asked, leaning against the doorframe. He’d only managed half a day off yesterday.

Greg knew there was no changing her mind once she’d decided. “If you can get Anne’s custody back, that’d be best.”

Felicia smiled softly. “Let’s hope.”

Heading downstairs, Felicia heard her parents having a playful argument. Colton finally gave in. “Okay, okay. Whatever you say, dear.”

“What are you two up to?” Felicia asked, coming into the room.

Ava glanced back at her. “Your father’s testing my patience. I’m deciding if he should have to sleep on the couch tonight.”

Felicia laughed, sitting next to her mom and linking arms with her. She reached out to gently pinch Sean’s chubby cheek, then shot her dad a teasing look. “Dad, you really need to stop getting on Mom’s nerves.”
