Felicia stared at him like she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Then suddenly, she burst out laughing. She knew exactly what he was up to. With a cold little smile, she said, “Figures. Guys like you never care about their reputation.”
Max just smiled, calm and unbothered. “I still care. Sometimes.”
“Oh really? Well, I care about mine. I don’t need people looking at me with pity.”
She turned around, heading back, just as Jeremy walked up to them. “All done talking?” he asked.
Felicia just gave a soft “mm-hmm.”
Jeremy shot Max a quick look, then said to Felicia, “Let’s head inside.”
Back in the private room, Felicia dropped into Jeremy’s seat without a second thought. That left Jeremy and Max sitting right next to each other. The two of them, rivals in every sense of the word, side by side. The whole scene felt weirdly tense, like everyone was waiting for something to happen.
Frank tried to get a new conversation going, steering things back to business. The mood started to loosen up a bit after that.
Dinner went on pretty smoothly. Everyone chatted and laughed, but every now and then, Max and Jeremy traded these sharp little comments, like they were competing without ever saying it out loud.
By the time dinner wrapped up, it was already past eight.
As they were heading out, Max turned to Felicia. “Don’t stay out too late. I’ll be home later tonight.”
He sounded like a husband checking in with his wife, letting her know his plans.
Felicia glanced at him. “You don’t have to tell me where you’re going.”
Max just smiled, then looked at Jeremy. “Goodnight, Mr. Milman.”
Jeremy and Felicia got into the car together and pulled away.
Jeremy said quietly, “Felicia, you still need to be careful with him.”
Felicia’s lips curled into a cool little smile. “If he wants to put on a show, I’ll play my part.”
“Just take care of yourself,” Jeremy said, his voice serious.
Darin smiled a little. “Just finished. My dad brought me some food.”
Max grinned back. “Showing off, are we?”
Darin shot him a look. “When you brag about Anne, I don’t say anything.”
“So you’ve been holding that in all this time.”
They took the elevator up to the office.
“Jeremy accepted your contract,” Darin said as they walked.
Max just nodded.
“So, that’s a whole year’s work down the drain,” Darin pointed out.
Max didn’t look regretful at all. He just sounded resigned. “There was no other way. If I didn’t go along, Anne would have lost her mom. I couldn’t let that happen.”
