Felicia watched him in silence. His eyes were so dark in the low light, deep and impossible to read, like a still pool that held all its secrets close.
After a moment, she spoke up. “If I looked like I used to, would you still be saying all this to me?”
Max didn’t even blink. “I don’t waste my time on what-ifs.” As he answered, he reached out and took her hand. Felicia tried to pull away, but he easily laced his fingers through hers, holding her there.
“What matters is right now. We all have to face the consequences of our choices, Felicia. You chose to marry me. You brought Anne into this world. That means you have to see it through.”
Felicia looked right at him. “You’re always so arrogant, Max. You think you’re always right.”
He held her gaze, his eyes so intense she almost felt swallowed up. “No matter what, the three of us are still a family, aren’t we?”
She looked away. “Anne is the only child we’ll ever have together.”
Max let out a slow breath, squeezing her hand a little tighter. “That’s fine. Anne is smart. We’ll raise her right. She can inherit everything from me one day.”
In their world, letting a daughter be the sole heir was unheard of. Whatever Max really thought, Felicia couldn’t help but be shocked. Luke had already told her that half of Max’s assets were in Anne’s name. No other family in their circle would ever do that.
Felicia dropped her gaze and stayed quiet.
“If you want to add more to the agreement, go ahead. Tomorrow, I’ll have the lawyer take care of the paperwork. Think it over tonight. Get some rest.”
He let go of her hand, set the contract down, and walked to the door. The room fell quiet as he slipped out and shut the door behind him.
Felicia stared at where he’d been, then glanced at the agreement on the table before getting up and heading to Anne’s room.
Anne was just waking up. “Mommy?”
Felicia went straight to her, sitting on the edge of the bed and rubbing her back gently. “Sorry, sweetie. Did I wake you up?”
She raised her brow. “Let’s see if you can stick it out that long.”
Max let out a low laugh. “You’re pretty sure you know what I’ll do.”
Felicia shrugged. “You know men better than anyone.” There was no love between them. Men always thought with their bodies. There had been Andrea, and there’d be someone else after her.
Max laughed again, and for some reason, the sound sent a shiver down her spine.
“Alright.” He signed without another word.
Felicia watched him finish, knowing deep down that this was just the beginning.
“I’ll have someone move your things into my room later,” Max said as he walked her downstairs and out of the building.
