The old principal paused for a moment, then nodded. “The snow was a lot lighter this year than usual. I remember you even complimented Felicia back then.”
Max watched the woman on stage, her voice steady and confident as she spoke. The lights cast a soft glow around her, making her look almost radiant. He smiled, just a hint. “I can’t really recall.”
“It’s been so many years.” The principal’s gaze shifted to the two people on stage, his thoughts drifting back. “Luke and Felicia always looked perfect together. I remember when Felicia got sick in her second year and had to take a break from school. She lost some of her looks because of the illness, but Luke never left her side. He wouldn’t let anyone joke about her. It’s nice to see they’re still so close. I wonder when they’ll finally make it official.” He chuckled, half to himself.
Max listened quietly, the corners of his mouth lifted in a small, unreadable smile. He didn’t respond.
Once the donation ceremony wrapped up, the alumni activities continued. Later, there would be a cultural performance in the evening. A bunch of students crowded around Felicia and Luke, asking for autographs and selfies. Neither of them turned anyone away. They signed for everyone and stood in the center for a big group photo with the school leaders, staff, and students. Felicia’s smile was bright and genuine.
After the students left, the old principal walked over with Max in tow. Felicia wasn’t really surprised to see him. His name was always right at the top of the school’s list of outstanding alumni. She’d figured he might not show, since she hadn’t seen him all day, but here he was.
Felicia and Luke shook hands with the principal, and the three of them chatted for a bit. Then the principal turned to Felicia and said, “Felicia, let me introduce you. This is Max Hawthorne, president of BlueMarble Investments, and Luke’s cousin. You gave him flowers as a student rep in your first year, remember? Now look at you both. You’ve both done so well!”
The principal didn’t want Felicia to get on Max’s bad side, and quickly tried to smooth things over. “Max is always really strict with himself, and at work too. Felicia, the fact that you got hired at BlueMarble Investments shows how talented you are.”
Felicia picked up on the principal’s hint. Anyone else in her shoes would probably say something flattering about Max and let it go. She understood what the principal was trying to do and just offered a gentle smile, saying nothing more.
Luke spoke up. “We and the director need to check out the school museum.”
