Students all around stared at them, curiosity lighting up their faces. Everyone had assumed Luke and Felicia were a couple, but now the vibe between these two men was so complicated, no one could quite figure it out.
Felicia turned to a nearby girl and smiled. “Hey, could you help hold this for him? My hands are full with these clothes.” The girl blinked in surprise, then glanced up at the tall, good-looking man. Her ears turned pink in an instant.
Max shifted his attention from Felicia to the girl. He was unflappably polite. “Thank you, that’s very kind of you.” The girl’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly reached out to help. “No problem.”
Max then slipped off his watch and handed it to Felicia. His eyes were gentle as he looked at her. Felicia caught his gaze for a moment, then took the watch. Max’s lips curled into a faint smile. He turned and walked back toward the court. “Offense or defense?” he asked Luke.
Luke shrugged. “Either is fine.”
Luke ended up picking offense. They played round after round, neither backing down. It was clear these two were evenly matched. No matter who attacked or defended, it was almost impossible to tell who had the upper hand.
Felicia watched from the sidelines, nerves tight. Of course she was rooting for Luke to win, and she couldn’t tear her eyes away from the game.
Suddenly her phone started buzzing in her bag. She snapped back to reality, pulled it out, and saw who was calling. She stepped away from the crowd and found a quieter spot to answer.
“Hello, Jeremy.”
Jeremy started with some questions about work. When business was out of the way, he asked, “So, how does it feel being back for the anniversary?”
Felicia smiled. “It’s nice. I haven’t been back in years. Honestly, being a student was way easier than adult life.”
Jeremy laughed. “What, am I working you too hard?”
Felicia chuckled. “I’d never dare say that. There’s no better boss than you.”
“You might want to practice your flattery with Anthony before you try it on me.”
“My sincerity is so obvious. You really don’t hear it?”
“Not really,” he teased.
Felicia sighed dramatically. “A little more subtlety from the boss would be great. Otherwise, you’ll break your employees’ hearts.”
Jeremy laughed. “Alright, I’ll try to be more delicate next time.”
Two school administrators who had been with Max came over to chat for a minute. Soon after, Max and the admins left. Felicia and Luke also left the court.
That evening, the school put on a dinner for alumni. It was no surprise that Max was the star of the night. Even though everyone there was impressive in their own right, meeting Max in person was a rare treat. People crowded around, eager to talk to him.
Max was surprisingly approachable, nothing like his usual distant self. He was polite and easygoing, never acting like he was above anyone. After all, these people weren’t really part of his world. There was nothing for him to gain or lose here, so he saw no need to put on airs.
Felicia and Luke found a quiet spot to sit, steering clear of the social buzz. Still, people came over to say hello. Felicia drew plenty of attention too, but since she and Luke stuck together, nobody dared ask for her number. They just chatted for a bit, nothing more.
An old friend from Luke’s high school days showed up. It had been years since they’d last talked, but Felicia remembered him too. The three of them sat together, catching up like old friends, sharing stories and laughing about everything that had happened over the years. When you click with people, the conversation just feels easy.
From across the room, Max couldn’t help but notice them. Felicia was laughing, genuinely happy, and it caught his eye. Maybe his stare was too intense, because Felicia suddenly looked over and met his gaze. Her smile faded. Max just smiled back, a little crooked, a little knowing. Felicia didn’t react. She simply looked away.
After dinner, everyone headed to the school’s arts performance. The anniversary celebration wrapped up around eight thirty. School leaders walked the alumni out.
Felicia climbed into Luke’s car. She hadn’t been home in days, so tonight she decided to go back. Colton and the rest of her family didn’t know she was living at Oakridge Estate. They just assumed she was busy with work and staying in her apartment downtown.
As soon as Felicia walked through the door, she could sense it. Something in the house felt off. The atmosphere was tense and heavy, and she knew right away something was wrong.

Is this coming to an end...
Oh nooo!! Don’t tell me Max will get washed ashore on a remote island then loses all his memory, then falls inlove with the local girl who saves him. Then when he meets Felicia again he won’t recognize her and breaks her heart again. Additional plot twist is that Felicia is pregnant with their 2nd child. Please pleaseee don’t give us this scenario.. LOL!!!...
If Max can be forgiven Darrin can be forgiven. And I do not like this marriage business but if it has to happen I hope after he gets stranded on some remote island alone while Felicia and his family fight over custody she wins and also gets half his estate. Then by time he comes back she's found having and remarried. Lol...
The writer is good. They're making me interested in Max. I won't say like yet....
It seems the only one who hasn't suffered is Max. Even his family fakes anger and disappointment all their own doing so they suffer a little. Everyone else has suffered. Luke and Jeremy unrequited. Felicia has suffered the most from family to unrequited to romance to long suffering Mother. Even baby Anne never had a mother til Felicia suffered then came back only to suffer some more. lol...
Oh no what did Colton do?... I have a bone to pick. When Olisha had to go the hospital why beg for Felicia? When she so loved Max? Seemed like she was in on the setup for Felicia to see a suicide for the 2nd time orchestrated by holden and his brother again. I might drop this series it's becoming endless with no real satisfaction for me. I don't need it to end because it's like a soap opera but if things don't end up making sense, tying up loose storylines it's gonna get old fast for me. Good luck author....
Anne, I think your baby brother is on the way. Thank goodness it doesn't say that Felicia is crying just like the last time but still, there's no willingness on her part. Max! You need to try harder. Make her fall in love with you again....
The writer did a big one with Jeremy's speech to Max. He said almost everything that needed to be said. I have wanted Felicia or someone who knows the past to just tell that whole stinking family what they did and how disgusting they are and what they're doing now how unfair it all is to Felicia. A pity it was only Max but he really needed to hear this (plus more)....
I love the chase of this novel, how you’ve build each of the characters. They almost seem like real. I feel like I know them irl. But however I would like to know what’s max’s pov and what’s going on in his head. I truly believe max’s just a grey character. And also please please please update more!!!...
I was really hoping that Max and Felicia would end up together, but why did Max do that to Felicia? 😭 Is that his way of making Felicia overcome the trauma Holden caused her? I don't think that's helping at all. I just hope Max's character has some redeeming qualities in the coming chapters....
