Ava couldn’t help but frown. Marian and Amaris glanced over, rolled their eyes, and muttered something under their breath, clearly annoyed by their presence.

Ava already knew Felicia wasn’t happy living with the Hawthornes, but she hadn’t realized even the housekeepers would be so bold. She marched forward, ready to speak her mind, but Felicia reached out and stopped her. “Ava, let’s just go.”

Ava was still fuming, but she held back and followed Felicia to the bedroom.

“They’re just housekeepers. Why do they think they can treat you like that?”

Felicia eased herself onto the bed, one hand on her belly. “Max lets them act that way. For now, it’s better if you just steer clear of them.”

If things really blew up, Marian and Amaris would probably run straight to Max with some twisted story, and who knows, he might even kick Ava out. Miranda pretended to protect Felicia, but deep down, she never really accepted her.

Ava felt her eyes sting. If Colton’s company hadn’t gone under, if Greg’s company hadn’t struggled, Felicia wouldn’t have to suffer like this.

Felicia saw right through her and gave her a gentle smile. “It’s okay, Ava. I’ve accepted how things turned out. Sure, the ending’s a little humiliating, but it gave me closure. I don’t regret anything, and I’m going to work on getting better from here on out.”

Ava nodded and squeezed Felicia’s hand. “Yeah. We’ll get through this.

She told Felicia the latest about Greg’s company. The new partnership was moving forward without a hitch, and investors seemed really optimistic about what was next.

Felicia looked genuinely relieved.

Reagan stopped and turned to face him. “So what are you going to do now? Get a divorce? Or something else?”

Max kept his eyes forward. “The baby’s almost here. It’s not the right time for a divorce.”

He had planned to leave Felicia after the baby was born, but right now, it just wasn’t possible. He didn’t want any more complications from her disrupting his life or work. He was tired of the drama she brought.

Reagan nodded. “You’re not someone who acts on impulse. You’re about to be a dad. It’s time to start thinking about the kid, too.”

He gave Max’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze.
