“We’ll visit the Gilbert family tomorrow morning and take Anne to the amusement park in the afternoon,” Max said, his voice casual but decisive. “If you stay over, we can all head out together. Saves me from making an extra trip to pick you up.”
Felicia shook her head, a tired smile on her lips. “I’ll just drive straight to the Gilbert’s in the morning. It’s already late and honestly, I don't want to deal with more back and forth.”
Max nodded without protest. “Alright. Get some sleep.”
He left shortly after, the sound of his car fading into the quiet night.
Felicia watched Anne’s childhood documentary all the way home, not switching off the screen until the city lights dimmed outside. For five years, Anne had been adored, raised with so much gentle care. Felicia wished more than anything that Anne’s world would always be that bright, that simple.
That night, her sleep was restless. A nightmare crept in—Anne’s voice ringing out, crying for her. “Mama!” Max stood nearby, holding their weeping daughter, his eyes cold and distant. Felicia tried to reach for Anne, desperate to pull her close, but no matter how she struggled, her hands just passed through. Before she could do anything, Max turned away, carrying Anne with him.
Felicia woke with a gasp, her chest tight and aching—so real it took forever for the fear to fade. She lay there staring at the ceiling, knowing she wouldn't sleep again.
By morning, her eyes were swollen with tears she didn’t remember shedding. She touched on a bit of cream, painted on careful makeup to hide any trace of her rough night.
Ava was heading home to visit her own family that day. Greg had volunteered to drive her and Colton, planning to stay there for two days. It was a long haul; they wanted to be on the road by seven to make it in time for lunch. Ava knew Felicia would want to spend time with Anne, so she didn’t push her to join them.
The porch bustled with luggage and packed bags. The trunk barely closed over all the gifts.
“Felicia, we’ll be back after a few days. Take care of yourself while we’re gone, alright?” Ava said, giving her a warm, motherly hug.
“Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll be fine, I promise.”
Felicia smiled, waving them off. “Safe drive, Greg.”
Greg flashed a grin. “You too. Call if you need anything, okay?”
“I will.”
As their car disappeared down the drive, the house felt suddenly quiet. Felicia slipped inside, then grabbed her phone and dialed Anne’s number.
“Mommy,” Anne answered, still sleepy and soft.
“You’re awake, sweetheart,” Felicia said gently.
“Yeah… Daddy’s helping me get dressed. Why didn’t you come home last night?”
“I was just really tired, so I stayed home. But we’ll see each other soon at Great-Grandpa Gilbert’s house, okay?”
“Okay!”
They chatted a few more moments about little things.
Just as Felicia was about to say goodbye, Anne piped up, “Daddy, you have to say something to Mommy too!”
“Must’ve been pretty fascinating. What was it?”
“You probably wouldn’t care for it.”
He grinned. “Try me. You never know.”
So she told him about a documentary she watched before, her voice coloring with warmth as she thought of Anne.
Luke listened, then quickly shifted gears. “So… Any plans for a trip? You’ve been busy all year, you deserve a break.”
Felicia tipped her head. “Haven’t really thought about it. What about you?”
“I thought maybe I’d drag Greg along, but I’m pretty sure Heather’s got him all booked up. I swear, he always picks his girlfriend over his friends. Don’t you think that’s a little unfair?”
His teasing made Felicia laugh, sunlight catching in her eyes. A soft breeze played with the strands of her hair, and just then, she felt lighter. For a moment, it was easy to forget everything heavy.
Luke watched her with a gentle, careful kind of fondness, but it’s edged with sadness she didn’t notice. Even knowing the odds were against him, he wasn’t ready to give up, not yet.
A sleek Rolls-Royce rolled to a stop just a few steps away.
The door opened.

Is this coming to an end...
Oh nooo!! Don’t tell me Max will get washed ashore on a remote island then loses all his memory, then falls inlove with the local girl who saves him. Then when he meets Felicia again he won’t recognize her and breaks her heart again. Additional plot twist is that Felicia is pregnant with their 2nd child. Please pleaseee don’t give us this scenario.. LOL!!!...
If Max can be forgiven Darrin can be forgiven. And I do not like this marriage business but if it has to happen I hope after he gets stranded on some remote island alone while Felicia and his family fight over custody she wins and also gets half his estate. Then by time he comes back she's found having and remarried. Lol...
The writer is good. They're making me interested in Max. I won't say like yet....
It seems the only one who hasn't suffered is Max. Even his family fakes anger and disappointment all their own doing so they suffer a little. Everyone else has suffered. Luke and Jeremy unrequited. Felicia has suffered the most from family to unrequited to romance to long suffering Mother. Even baby Anne never had a mother til Felicia suffered then came back only to suffer some more. lol...
Oh no what did Colton do?... I have a bone to pick. When Olisha had to go the hospital why beg for Felicia? When she so loved Max? Seemed like she was in on the setup for Felicia to see a suicide for the 2nd time orchestrated by holden and his brother again. I might drop this series it's becoming endless with no real satisfaction for me. I don't need it to end because it's like a soap opera but if things don't end up making sense, tying up loose storylines it's gonna get old fast for me. Good luck author....
Anne, I think your baby brother is on the way. Thank goodness it doesn't say that Felicia is crying just like the last time but still, there's no willingness on her part. Max! You need to try harder. Make her fall in love with you again....
The writer did a big one with Jeremy's speech to Max. He said almost everything that needed to be said. I have wanted Felicia or someone who knows the past to just tell that whole stinking family what they did and how disgusting they are and what they're doing now how unfair it all is to Felicia. A pity it was only Max but he really needed to hear this (plus more)....
I love the chase of this novel, how you’ve build each of the characters. They almost seem like real. I feel like I know them irl. But however I would like to know what’s max’s pov and what’s going on in his head. I truly believe max’s just a grey character. And also please please please update more!!!...
I was really hoping that Max and Felicia would end up together, but why did Max do that to Felicia? 😭 Is that his way of making Felicia overcome the trauma Holden caused her? I don't think that's helping at all. I just hope Max's character has some redeeming qualities in the coming chapters....
