Andrea glanced toward the entrance of the banquet hall. Felicia sat waiting in the lounge, her hands resting on her belly. The quiet was broken by the sound of the door opening. Felicia looked up and saw Darin walk in with Jeremy right behind him. She started to get up, but Darin gave her a look that told her to stay seated. She listened, settling back in her chair.
Darin sat across from her, his voice gentle enough. “What brings you here?”
Felicia gave him a polite smile. “I was hoping you could take a look at this, Mr. Foxhall.” She pulled a folder from her bag, handed over the documents, and explained why she’d come—careful not to mention Andrea. “Even though I’ve already been turned down, I wanted to try one last time with you.”
Ava had just texted her that her father was home. Riverline Properties had sent an answer—the assessment hadn’t passed. It was disappointing, but not surprising.
Darin picked up the documents and began to look through them. Just then, the door flew open, startling everyone. They all looked up.
Andrea walked in wearing high heels, her eyes sweeping across the room before settling on Darin. “Hey, Darin.”
Darin glanced at her. “What’s up?”
Andrea walked over and spotted the file in his hands. She took it, flipped through the pages, then tossed it onto the table in front of Felicia. Her voice was cool. “Brightfield Digital’s acquisition didn’t pass Riverline Properties’ assessment. You should work on fixing your own company first. You can always try again later. But going over everyone’s head to come straight to my brother? That’s not really appropriate.”
That was all Darin needed to hear to understand everything.
Felicia studied Andrea’s sweet face, and the truth of the saying about wolves in sheep’s clothing hit her. “Then, Miss Curtis, can you tell me exactly why the assessment failed?”
Andrea’s eyes narrowed. “If you need someone else to explain your problems to you, that just makes me more certain your company has real issues.”
“Max!” Andrea called out, moving to his side and slipping her arm through his in a way that was just a little too familiar.
Felicia kept her gaze down and walked toward the door. As she passed Max, his voice came out low and cold. “Go home.”
A sharp ache squeezed her chest. She kept moving, slow and careful, Jeremy quietly following her out.
Darin stayed where he was, watching Felicia’s heavy, careful steps as she left. There was something about the way she moved, something that made his chest tighten in a way he couldn’t explain.
Felicia and Jeremy disappeared through the door.
