To think that Easton's wife was actually close friends with Evelynn. It was obvious that Zenith was backed into a corner and trying to use that connection to take a shortcut. Easton had likely begged Evelynn for a favor.
The executives had followed Mr. Hawthorne for years and knew his working style intimately. He was not the type to let personal feelings interfere with business.
After listening to Mr. Green's summary, Max's striking features remained perfectly impassive. He asked no further questions. Based on his utter indifference, the executives assumed that even if Easton had tried to use Mr. Hawthorne's wife for leverage, it was a completely fruitless effort.
They brushed the encounter off as a minor interruption and put it entirely out of their minds.
The following day, Felicia called Caroline.
She intended to tell her the harsh truth. Their proposal simply would not pass BlueMarble Investments' strict review. She was willing to introduce Easton to other industry contacts, but whether he succeeded or failed would depend entirely on his own competence.
But she never even got the chance to say it.
The moment the call connected, Caroline's ecstatic voice burst through the speaker.
"I was just about to call you, Felicia. Easton rang me today and said their proposal miraculously passed the first round of reviews. He told me they had initially received word that they failed, so this reversal is unbelievable. Thank you so much, Felicia. We owe you everything."
Felicia froze in place. Her mind went completely blank as she tried to process the news. She had not contacted Max at all.
For Easton's proposal to pass the first round, someone highly influential had to have deliberately pulled strings for him.
It was not until Caroline mentioned Easton bumping into Max the night before that the pieces clicked into place.
Easton had told Max about her connection to Caroline. Was that why Max had personally intervened to keep Zenith's proposal in the running?
Caroline did not seem to notice Felicia's prolonged silence. She was simply too overjoyed by the favor to pick up on anything unusual.
"Easton always told me that Max is a notoriously ruthless man when it comes to business," Caroline rambled happily. "This just proves how much weight you hold in his heart, Felicia. You can tell just by looking at Anne that she was raised with so much love and indulgence. It is rare for a woman marrying into such a powerful family to find true happiness, but no matter what happened in the past, he clearly cares about you right now. You really need to hold onto that, Felicia."
Caroline's words were heavy with earnest advice.
Felicia slowly pulled herself from her thoughts, unwilling to continue the conversation.
Felicia looked at the little girl, entirely defeated, and affectionately ruffled her hair.
At six o'clock, Anne received a call from her father.
Felicia was currently in Jeremy's office. To help her acclimatize to the workload waiting for her in Cloudville, he had handed her several thick files to review in advance so she would know what to expect.
Suddenly, the office door swung open.
Anne poked her little head into the room. "Mommy. Uncle Jeremy."
Anne had visited Jeremy's office before, and by now, everyone in the company knew she was the daughter of Evelynn and Max.
Jeremy smiled warmly, waving her inside. "Come here, Anne."
Anne trotted into the room and stopped right in front of him. "Uncle Jeremy, can my mommy finish work now?"

Is this coming to an end...
Oh nooo!! Don’t tell me Max will get washed ashore on a remote island then loses all his memory, then falls inlove with the local girl who saves him. Then when he meets Felicia again he won’t recognize her and breaks her heart again. Additional plot twist is that Felicia is pregnant with their 2nd child. Please pleaseee don’t give us this scenario.. LOL!!!...
If Max can be forgiven Darrin can be forgiven. And I do not like this marriage business but if it has to happen I hope after he gets stranded on some remote island alone while Felicia and his family fight over custody she wins and also gets half his estate. Then by time he comes back she's found having and remarried. Lol...
The writer is good. They're making me interested in Max. I won't say like yet....
It seems the only one who hasn't suffered is Max. Even his family fakes anger and disappointment all their own doing so they suffer a little. Everyone else has suffered. Luke and Jeremy unrequited. Felicia has suffered the most from family to unrequited to romance to long suffering Mother. Even baby Anne never had a mother til Felicia suffered then came back only to suffer some more. lol...
Oh no what did Colton do?... I have a bone to pick. When Olisha had to go the hospital why beg for Felicia? When she so loved Max? Seemed like she was in on the setup for Felicia to see a suicide for the 2nd time orchestrated by holden and his brother again. I might drop this series it's becoming endless with no real satisfaction for me. I don't need it to end because it's like a soap opera but if things don't end up making sense, tying up loose storylines it's gonna get old fast for me. Good luck author....
Anne, I think your baby brother is on the way. Thank goodness it doesn't say that Felicia is crying just like the last time but still, there's no willingness on her part. Max! You need to try harder. Make her fall in love with you again....
The writer did a big one with Jeremy's speech to Max. He said almost everything that needed to be said. I have wanted Felicia or someone who knows the past to just tell that whole stinking family what they did and how disgusting they are and what they're doing now how unfair it all is to Felicia. A pity it was only Max but he really needed to hear this (plus more)....
I love the chase of this novel, how you’ve build each of the characters. They almost seem like real. I feel like I know them irl. But however I would like to know what’s max’s pov and what’s going on in his head. I truly believe max’s just a grey character. And also please please please update more!!!...
I was really hoping that Max and Felicia would end up together, but why did Max do that to Felicia? 😭 Is that his way of making Felicia overcome the trauma Holden caused her? I don't think that's helping at all. I just hope Max's character has some redeeming qualities in the coming chapters....
