The Ugly Wife’s Stunning Comeback (Felicia and Max) novel Chapter 772

"Jeremy is with me," Darin replied.

"You can come over. As for Mr. Milman, tell him to make himself scarce."

"He understands Felicia's current condition better than anyone," Darin argued.

Max's tone left absolutely no room for negotiation. "He's not a doctor. And I'm not generous enough to let him into my home."

Darin fell silent. Lowering the phone, he turned to look at Jeremy standing beside him. Since the call had been loud enough to hear, Jeremy had caught Max's harsh words. The outcome was exactly as he had expected.

"It’s okay. You can check on Felicia first," Jeremy told him.

Darin nodded. "I'll contact you later."

"Alright."

Back in the study, right after Max hung up with Darin, another call came in. It was Isaac. Max's sudden departure had stalled three full days' worth of executive work. While Isaac had no idea what was going on, he suspected that his boss dropping everything to fly to Australia had something to do with Felicia.

After running through a mountain of business reports, Isaac pivoted to a more pressing matter. "Mrs. Steele has been buried. Barnaby is still undergoing medical treatment, but his prognosis isn't optimistic. Their youngest daughter is currently living with Mrs. Steele's mother, and someone has been secretly providing financial assistance to them."

Isaac paused before dropping the real bombshell. "Right before Mrs. Steele jumped from the hospital roof, someone called her. We tracked down the registered owner of that phone number. It belongs to one of Miss Curtis's personal bodyguards."

This was a twist Isaac had never seen coming. Why would Andrea have any connection with Mrs. Steele? Also, when Barnaby's son launched a surprise attack on Max, it’s Andrea who had coincidentally been there to take the knife for him. Now that Max and Felicia had gone public with their relationship, Andrea must have been driven over the edge. Perhaps orchestrating this tragedy was just her twisted way of trying to win back Max's pity. But no one could have anticipated that Felicia's drastic transformation would ultimately force Max to change his mind entirely.

Listening to Isaac's report, Max's dark eyes grew dangerously cold.

The moment that call ended, Max dialed another number. It was picked up immediately on the other end. "Mr. Hawthorne," a respectful voice greeted.

As the door clicked shut, Max leaned back in his leather chair and pinched the bridge of his nose, deep exhaustion settling into the hard lines of his face.

Down at the harbor, Jeremy stood on the docks, watching Darin board the private yacht. He lingered there for a long time, staring out at the vast expanse of the ocean. The sea breeze was exceptionally strong today, whipping wildly against his coat.

At noon, Max joined Felicia and Anne for lunch. In the afternoon, he took them out on the lake in a small rowboat.

Felicia lay lazily across the bow, her long, silky hair spilling freely over her shoulders. The gentle breeze played with the hem of her skirt. Stretching one slender arm over the edge, she trailed her pale, delicate fingers through the water, drawing shallow ripples across the glassy surface. Below, a school of fish swam happily around the boat. One brave little fish darted up, gently nibbled at her fingertip, and then quickly flicked its tail and darted away.

Watching the little creature vanish into the depths, Felicia's eyes curved into a soft, genuine smile.

Standing on the opposite end of the boat with the oars in his hands, Max quietly watched the unmoving woman. In that fleeting moment of peace, she looked just like a docile, sleepy kitten basking in the sun.
