Still, maybe it was because she was about to have her baby, but Miranda had prepared a gift for Felicia to bring home. Ava took the bag, barely glancing at it, clearly not interested in opening it. She smiled to herself, a little bitter. “Why would Miranda bother with some nobody like us?”

She set the bag on the coffee table and helped Felicia go take a shower first.

Once Felicia was done and settled, they both sat down on the sofa and started talking. After a while, Ava spoke up. “Felicia, have you ever thought about leaving with the baby?”

The idea of leaving the child with Max, someone so cold, was honestly scary.

Felicia ran her hand over her belly, looking helpless. “Of course I’ve thought about it. Max probably wouldn’t care, but the Hawthorne family cares a lot about this baby. I can’t just take her and go. Not like this.”

She couldn’t really go anywhere right now, anyway.

Ava let out a short, bitter laugh. “If they care so much, why do they let Max treat you this way?”

No matter what, Ava knew they couldn’t afford to keep the baby.

Felicia tried to reassure her. “She’ll be the only girl in the Hawthorne family. I’m sure they’ll treat her well.”

Ava reached over and gently touched Felicia’s belly, sighing. “I hope you’re right.”

The next morning, Max took Felicia to the hospital for a checkup. Ava tagged along.

They went to a private hospital owned by the Hawthorne Corporation. The staff had gotten the memo ahead of time. From nine to eleven in the morning, the entire OB-GYN department was off-limits to anyone else. Everything was reserved just for Felicia.

Ava couldn’t help but feel a little awed by the Hawthorne family’s influence.

Her phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen and saw Max’s name. She picked up. “Hello?”

“Where are you?” His voice was as flat as ever.

“I’m in the hallway outside the ultrasound room, having breakfast,” Felicia answered.

“Come over when you’re done.”

He hung up as soon as he finished speaking.

Once Felicia finished eating, Ava helped her up and they headed to the lounge. They could hear Max inside, still on the phone.
